Not many democratic governments will survive this. Johnson is lucky that he has a big majority and has only just been elected. Four years is a very long time in politics and in the event they do lose the next election it's unlikely to be CV-19 that has been their undoing.

Unless of course senior government officials are found guilty of gross misconduct or even criminal actions in the handling of the virus. Johnson's own position would be untenable and public opinion could possibly bring about an election
What you are forgetting is that people's memory of things is extremely short these days, social media and 24 hour news has too much control over what people think and talk about. Once this pandemic is declared over it won't take much to have most people to forget all about it. Most governments will come through this with promises of better preparedness for Future pandemics, then after awhile someone will go out and shoot a lion or something else daft and post a picture of it on social media and people will be outraged over it it will be on the news and covid 19 will become a distant memory. It will happen quickly once the pandemic is over.

A lot of that is true and I hinted towards it myself in my post. But what I think you may be underestimating, and I sincerely hope I'm wide of the mark here, is the economic fall out from this. I think it could be very bad in some countries.

The future economy is dependant on how long Lockdown goes on for, here in Ireland it's been pushed to the 5th of May, I'd imagine that alot of the restrictions will be lifted then.

It will be absolutely awful here.....
Important to observe the “shape” of the economic recovery curve. If it’s a v shaped recovery then things will bounce back quickly and with a minimal loss of growth. If it’s an L-shaped curve then it’s Great Depression type territory.

And a lot of this depends on how quickly the virus is brought under control or burns itself out. Which is unlikely to happen this year or maybe even next year.

Only 118 people died yesterday everyone - we're well past the curve - hurray!

The DM are absolutely jizzing their ocean coloured pants now we've hit five figures. Once we get 1,000 deaths in a day there will be pure limbs down at Fleet Street.

Ireland wasn't actually one of the countries I had in mind who's government would be under pressure from this.

As a mater of interest, what is the Irish government ding to protect peoples' incomes and business's in general during the lockdown? What is that likely to cost them as regards outlay coupled with loss of income, and is their economy strong enough to sustain it.?

If the pattern holds correct, it should be 1000+ deaths tomorrow.

Or Wednesday actually as this is a Bank Holiday.

Yes, the UK is that terrible at this.

Found out a colleague of mine has gotten it and been put in an induced coma. Really sound fella too. Grim.
Wish him all the best. I was told by one of my team that her husbands friend is in an induced coma atm. Early 40s. Apparently they expect him to pull through but it must be excruciating for his family. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Personally I think it's going to be more of a "U" shape than a "V" shape. Recession is an almost certainty and I wouldn't totally rule out a depression either. I think a global depression is definitely on the cards as not all countries and banks are as strong as the UK. Europe will put a massive strain on Germany too.

Ironically, it could well be China who come out of this strongest.
