Copa America 2021

I really wish there was no football this summer. Now in addition of dealing with Everton’s drama I have to deal with Colombia’s. If we don’t win a least one of the qualifying matches coming up we probably won’t make it to the WC and then my poor heart is going to be so sad this summer because of the Blues and the Yellows.

It will make the highs (or relative highs) more sweeter when they eventually come though. Let’s just hope we're young enough to be able to stand and celebrate.

What’s the point?

Surely the biggest revenue spinner is fans? Do sponsors really want to be part of a rushed job, with no fans, making it the worst copa every?

Feels like such a wasted opportunity, they could have taken it to the states, and had it in highly populated latín areas and at least got 20-30,000 through the door, especially as it isn’t football season.
Did the US even want it? They aren't competing in it. It's not logistically easy to just quickly take on a tournament with fans attending. It starts in less than 2 weeks. Why would they bother taking on the burden?

Maybe they should have just cancelled it but they will still get the money from the TV deals. Much better for the FAs, TV, sponsors etc to get it played as otherwise it would just be completely cancelled as there is a World Cup next year.

I'm not saying it is the right decision to play it, but you can't just say they should have played it in the US and everything would be fine.

Not saying “fine”, I’m more saying it’s more logical.

I think we all agree there’s no logic in moving it to Brazil if they cannot actually have fans present?
Just seems such a poor set up, feel for the fans more than anything, who knows what’s happening.

Personally, I can’t see a reason why America wouldn’t host it, there’s no reason they couldn’t have had the hubs like the North/South.

just a shame cause it’s a great tournament I enjoy watching.

Well one big reason would be that the MLS is currently being played. And they would only have 9 days to plan a tournament regardless of that.

I'd love for it to be a proper Copa America and there are issues playing it in Brazil no doubt. But the US just doesn't seem like an even vaguely viable option.

The point, as always in football, is money. Copa America has been the largest form of revenue for Conmebol, even without fans they are supposed to make a bunch of money from TV deals and sponsorships.

And while there won’t be fans at the stadium I have no doubt that if the governors of those states where matches are happening don’t have restrictions in place then Brazilians will be out on the streets celebrating the tournament which can help increase the Covid cases in a region that has already had over 500,000 deaths. Of the 10 countries with the world’s most daily cases and deaths per 100,000 residents this past week, six are South American. Brazil is ninth in daily cases and seventh in deaths. It is just a poor decision by Conmebol and some coaches and players are also upset because Brazil then gets the privilege of hosting the tournament once more when they were the last country to host it two years ago even though locations are to be rotated.

My Brazilian friends are absolutely furious that Bolsanaro has agreed to host it there, where they have both awful COVID numbers, and civil unrest

As they should be. There is no reason to be using resources to hold a cup in Brazil when there are so many needs at the moment because of Covid.

I think the general consensus is that Bolsanaro is a dangerous idiot, who’ll do anything for his ego
Unfortunately we have several of those in South America at the moment. Colombia’s president is not any better. It was the civil unrest because of his government policies that created all the commotion in Colombia that prevented the cup from happening there. His government has been horrible too dealing with Covid.

I’ve seen a lot of right wing leaders in South America basically copied the Trump playbook which is massively disappointing

Trump gave them the perfect ammunition not only to right wing leaders in South America but all over the world. He is the worst thing that could have come out of politics in recent years.

The Brazilians are in contact with the players of other teams trying an organized movement against the America's Cup.

The Brazilian internationals have it clear: they will not play the Copa América . In addition, the leaders of the Canarinho dressing room have been in constant contact in the last two days with the figures of the other South American teams in an attempt to create an organized movement against the holding of the CONMEBOL competition .

The riot of the Brazilian internationals began at the moment in which the players found out, through the press, that the America's Cup would be in Brazil. The group was in the concentration of the Comary Farm and the reaction was of horror, indignation, since the impression that existed within the group was that, given the lack of control of the pandemic in South America, the tournament would be canceled . The players felt betrayed and used by the board of the CBF , especially its president Rogerio Caboclo . They felt that they had been exposed to a situation in which they would be seen as insensitive to the health crisis that their country is experiencing, with almost 500,000 deaths, to play a competition that seems totally unnecessary: this would be the fourth America's Cup in the last six years.

The players expressed their frustration to coach Tite and asked for a meeting with President Caboclo , who was increasingly questioned by rumors of an alleged case of harassment of a CBF worker, revealed by ESPN Brasil and Globoesporte.

The meeting between the manager and the dressing room leaders was tense and made the situation even worse. So much so that it ended with Rogerio Caboclo threatening to kick Juninho Paulista , coordinator of the national team, for his inability to control the riot of the players.

Tite and Juninho have empathized with the players from the first moment and supported the movement of their costumes. The distance and bad atmosphere in the relationship between the coaching staff of the absolute canarinha and the CBF board and the coach, known for his balance and peaceful nature, has been trying to protect his players from anger since Tuesday. of President Caboclo, who saw in this Copa América in Brazil a political victory in a moment of fragility.

So much so that the leader prohibited the captain and leader of Brazil, Casemiro, from appearing before the press this Thursday night , which caused the fury of the Real Madrid midfielder , who was eager to make public the frustration of the group.

Concerned with the impact of the bad atmosphere in the qualifying matches, Tite appeared only before the press and affirmed that they will only break the silence after Tuesday's game.

"The players have their opinion, they have expressed it to the president and they will make it public in due course. And that has a lot to do with the absence of our captain, Casemiro, here before you," explained Tite.

It is not yet known if the movement for not playing the Copa América will be transmitted contagiously to the other teams. Although stars such as Agüero , Luis Suárez, Muslera and De Arrascaeta have already spoken publicly critically about the realization of the competition.
