Computer Builds

I used to have a custom built computer, I don’t consider myself sufficiently knowledgeable to build one myself, handily my mate runs a shop that builds them so always got decent advice.

I can only game on PC, but as I was travelling a lot with my job, I took the plunge last year and got the best Alienware gaming laptop I could get.

For portability, I’d certainly recommend it. Playing RDR2 with ease at the mo.

Ha ha, for me it's not enough options.

It is awkward to recommend because I don't know your full set up. Asus or Gigabyte is a better brand than MSI. I suggest you go for the newer boards as there can be compatibility issues with the old.

Also, I won't buy anything from Amazon.

Most people go for a HDD and m.2 for a system.

Why would you pick an HDD over an SSD? I've got a m.2 and 2 SSDs with a old 1tb hybrid there for backups but I barely touch it.

If it's purely space/cost then fair enough.

Bit more research done and we're almost there...

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X
Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti
HDD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB)
Power: Corsair RM750
Case:

Just need a case that fits it all now.

Are there any crucial parts I'm missing there? Do I need another source of a hard drive?

(I'll take over from you, then, @Nymzee as the butt of everyone's mickeytaking...)

My next desktop/laptop will preferably be able to deal with 1080 and 4k video and associated video editing software (probably Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve).

Doing a bit of reading around it, I've come up with the following specs:

Windows 10 64-bit
Minimum processor: i7 newer generation
Minimum RAM: 16GB
Relatively decent graphics card with min 4GB RAM
SSD + HD
Probably plenty of external high-speed storage for video projects.

Anyone think of anything else I should be looking at? (Apart from saying iOS!) Also, since I wouldn't be building my own, is there any reason not to consider gaming PCs (since I presume they tend to have similar graphics requirements)?

At the moment, I'm keeping an eye on something like this to see if it goes on offer:
HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-0043ng Intel i7-9700F, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GeForce GTX 1660 (6GB)

Oh right, I know but I'm just looking for the best sort of gaming performance but keeping the cost on the lower side. I don't need overkill RAM when I can upgrade at a later date.

Absolutely, low profile components are more expensive and sacrifices performance. It may not matter that much for memory.

Exactly that.

I'll be tempted to go for more ram if editing videos. At least 32GB.

Ive bought my last few PCs from here.

Havent price checked for a while but they were the best around last time I did.

I suggest you check the following as they maybe included in the components.

Thermal paste (the cpu may have it)
cooler for cpu
additional case fans

DVDR burner but not essential.

I’ve got a USB DVD reader now.

The CPU comes with a cooling fan (Wraith Spire or something?) but not sure on paste. Wasn’t sure on external fans myself. The case comes with 2 I think. How many fans do people recommend CPU + case?
