I built a 386 a 486 and two Pentium systems from scratch in the 90s, before shifting to laptops.

Am I update enough to help?

That's part of the fun during system building.

Apparently the 3600 is the better value over the 3600X but it comes down price/performance ratio.

ETA: You also need a new motherboard and RAM. The newer motherboards have m.2/nvme slots where you add your SSD card. The Ryzen 5 is a lot more power efficient than your aged i7 so you'll recoup some of your cost through your electricity bill.

You've convinved me to just build a fresh system - been putting it off too long. So much information to take in to make sure all my components fit together. So far...

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X (Only £10 more than the 3600)
Motherboard:
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti (Existing)
HDD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB
Memory:
Power:
Case:

On the hunt now for the best priced motherboard that suits the 3600X. I may also return the SSD drive and replace with 1-2 NVMe drives.

Looks like you need a new system given that your processor is 10 years old this month. Try the AMD Ryzen series over the Intel chips for value for money and performance. I prefer the m.2 drives so your recent Samsung SSD is a waste of money.

Would you be building your system?

Haha what a bizarre thing to say.

An SSD is in no way a waste of money. M.2 drives are great for your os, but not particularly outstanding for regular use. I prefer having an m.2 alongside a couple of SSDs.

Right gonne get this motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX

Can anyone confirm I'm reading the possibilities right?

1x M.2 drive for one NVMe SSD drive
6x SATA slots (does my previously bought SSD drive fit ONE of these slots?)
4x DIMM slots to 64g so I can buy/eventually upgrade to 4x 16GB slots?

Possibly this motherboard for a cheap but decently powered? @Undisputed_blue

There are too many options!

MSI B450 Tomahawk Max

Ha ha, for me it's not enough options.

It is awkward to recommend because I don't know your full set up. Asus or Gigabyte is a better brand than MSI. I suggest you go for the newer boards as there can be compatibility issues with the old.

Also, I won't buy anything from Amazon.

Most people go for a HDD and m.2 for a system.
