Player Valuation: £70m
due to the extortionate costs of the newspapers in Egypt I've been a little lax on the info flow, however I did manage to read a comment by a mirror journo who says that Moyes is too safe to win silverware, and unless he releases his players from this lone striker (home or away) he will never win anything.

What do we think about that?

I do feel he is safety first, rather than going for it.

I posted this a while ago, mate. :)

Although I think having 2 or 3 strikers might not be the answer, the fact is he's too negative, and something needs to change as teams are privvy to our tactics now, and we're leaking points because of it.

Definitely a cautious manager, I think it could be with the fact the he was a centre-back and always has defence at heart.

That said, Mancini was a gem of a player and he uses about 21 defensive midfielders.

When he's really going for it, maybe. More like 36.

I'm not going to make Moyes out to be an ultra attacking manager, he's far from it, but I thought it was poor journalism, probably from someone who's seen us play about five times in the past three years, and has little knowledge of the game.

It was based around our formation and how it was a negative setup, which is rubbish really. Cahill is as close to a forward as any so called 'midfielder' I've ever seen. What does he want us to do, Play 4-4-2 and use our only goalscorer in a disciplined position? Doesn't sound like a good idea to me. If you actually look at the way Cahill performs the role, he clearly isn't playing as a fifth midfielder, it's actually not far off the ridiculously attacking, fantastic 4-4 ******* 2.

Good point, however when he brings on more attacking options we create 7 clear cut chances.

The mentality of Moyes is to be safe from relegation first, and then he goes for Europe. I think for people looking in, whether or not they have watched 38 or 5 games can kind of see that when we play with one striker upfront at home, then we are not a team who is prepared to go for it from the off.

Trouble is I have seen Moyes go for it and he's reaped the benefits.

Not to rub it in, but me and you have mentioned this for ages but you still get fans banging on about not playing 4-4-2.

If people are wanting 2 strkers ala Beckford Yak or Saha upfront together...you have to drop Cahill as he's the least technically gifted midfielder in the squad IMO so that wont happen

Well 451 is a 433 when attacking, but it's about the distance between the midfield and the lone striker, and the bypassing of the midfield, when 451 loses it's effectiveness.

True, and I have no problem with Moyes changing things and trying to impact the game, he should be doing it more, you don't always have to play the same players. In this area, I'd say he was negative. His substitutions and reading of the game leave alot to be desired at times. He doesn't react quick enough for me.

I don't agree with the formation arguments though. At it's most negative it's 4-4-1-1, the only time Cahill does enough midfield duties to be considered a 'midfielder' is when we are pinned back, and that's very rare nowadays considering our improvement in possession and strength in midfield. Even when Saha and Yakubu play together, one drops in and plays slightly withdrawn. When Beckford came on against Liverpool, Yakubu started playing as a second striker, dropping deep and trying to play him in. The formation doesn't change all that much, just the different styles of players playing in that position.

Given his workrate, understand of the role and goalscoring abilities, Cahill is the most natural fit really.

Right but do you not think that sometimes we have too much of a distance between the players? Also what do you think of when Arteta knocks the ball back for Distin to hoof?

I guess its down to the link up of the strikers to the midfield. The only one that does this IMO is Yakubu.
