Centre-midfield - we need to take the brakes off

We never replaced Arteta. We need an Arteta. A Fabregas. A Hazard. Someone who can play the final ball.

This isn't about personnel IMO, it's about mixing our style. We're predictable and one paced, due to our reluctance to vary our tactics. We need to get the ball from from front to back quicker on occasion and increase our pace in the final third. We're often faced with 2 banks of 4 to try and find our way through, but that's down to the fact that we generally move forwards slowly and allow the opposition to get set defensively

It's entirely about personnel because Martinez has his tactics and his ideas about how football should be played and we're more likely to sign new players than change his mindset.

It should be a horses for courses situation. There's teams and games were we should definitely play the two more defensively minded players as we don't want to be wide open. But against teams who are sitting back deep and are unadventurous, or we are chasing a game late on we should be looking for more creativity.

Also I fan opposition team has set up thinking "Everton are going to attack down the flanks today, we'll double up on Coleman and Baines", having an extra creature player in he middle will throw heir game plan and really open things up for us.

I think we are predictable. Dont get me wrong, it's a good type of predictability/consistency that we are able to pen teams in and get a grip of the game and dictate what happens in it. But I think we all know that it'd pay to be able to switch into a different tempo on occasion...the opposition can get into a nice groove of sending players out to close down space and it's all very comfortable even though they're never hardly in the game themselves.

By that token he also signed both of the players in question knowing exactly what they'd bring to the party, so the style of CM we currently employ also form part of his 'tactics and ideas'

I think we've lost a bit of counter attacking style we had early this season too. That helped us a lot as teams weren't sure how to play us.

Using the possession based stuff is good but at times we need to get it forward quick and turn the other sides CB's
Exactly

I'm not one for specific tactics I think it's about footballers all the great teams at club and international level are very fluid playing what they see rather than rigid formation but we have real physical weakness in midfield with Osman and Pienaar against the top sides and Barkley is work in progress.

This season is bedding the idea of not giving the ball away while evaluating who can play, in truth we need quite a few players.

I think McCarthy should push up more. I also think Kev should be first choice on the left now. Pienaar is doing my head in the way he slows down play and tries all those flicks and the way he falls over easily. It was an embarrassment the way he tried to get a penalty yesterday

Watched him specifically yesterday.

People are spot on when they say he's great on the ball and is a good outlet, but that's what you need in a midfielder more than a winger. A winger should be creating chances and scoring goals. He had two guilt edged chances and he didn't take either of them. Not good enough, imo.
