Central midfield

This is by far and away the most focussed football discussion I've seen on GOT for a good six months!!!

I agree with BLF in that it depends on how Fellaini is to be used. We need to bring in either a good central midfielder so Fellaini can play the AMC role permanently, or a good AMC so that Fellaini can alternate.

Charlie Adam is neither, so rule him out.

Surely the hope is that Naismith or Kev will be the good AMC once they've settled in? I still imagine that Moyes' ultimate plan is Kev and Pienaar on the wings and Naismith behind Jelavic in front of Fellaini and Gibson.

Honestly I think we're good for CM. Pienaar and Osman can play there comfortably, we've got Gibson and Fellaini and defensively, Heitinga and *cries ...Neville.

I think Osman can do CM if somebody sits deep and just does the defensive work - but only against the poorer teams in the league, and not when we go into games as underdogs (i.e. against the Uniteds, and Citys away, etc).

Nonsense. Osman has won us big games with truly exceptional performances from central midifeld.

Chelsea, Man Utd, Fiornentina are three that spring to mind.

I would agree with these.

Surely backup and competition for jelavic is our priority over central midfield. Ideally we would cover both but if Jelly got injured it would more drastic effect on our season.

At the end of the day, we've several options for central midfield, with two players, if fit, almost certainly guaranteed a game in Gibson and Fellaini. And rightly so, but we do need other options. Osman, imo, is good there in a five-man midfield where he can roam and be creative, and Neville shown that he can still do a job in a 'soak up the pressure and give the ball to somebody else' role. Pienaar can play central too, but will always start left midfield. I think we need one more just simply for numbers; we can't expect Gibson and Fellaini to play 90 minutes of every game. I have no idea if Naismith can play central, and probably Barkley won't be used much at all. One more midfield and I think it's the strongest midfield set we've had in 20 years.
