Someone will do time for this one, as its a completely deliberate engineered fiddle, that'll have been signed off by production and maybe higher. It'll have been driven by cost saving, as I believe it relates to the adblue system. It sounds like some much smaller version has been fitted to the US variants that the EU models, that is programmed to only work when it recognises the emissions test sequence. That's sly.

Odds on VW building a factory in the US shortly? I fancy there'll be a deal done that sees them do just that.

Not great for reputation sadly though mate is it? Seems completely at odds with Audi's core values for example?

Mind you if VW have done it so easily, probably other manufacturers have done similar?

They've not long recovered Audi's reputation over there too.

Won't affect you in the slightest mate.

Wasn't Toyota's problem with brakes that were causing fatal accidents though? I'd say fair enough on the chest-puffing on that one if it got lives saved.

Both Toyota and Audi's problem was that people were flooring the accelerator thinking it was the brake. With Audi the brake pedal was actually really close to the gas pedal but there was no law against it at the time. Because of the Audi thing you have to have your foot on the brake to put the car in drive methinks. Toyota actually did nothing wrong though they should be prosecuted for creating the most bland appliances on 4 wheels.

Unless there are American execs involved I don't see anyone getting prosecuted. The Passat is made in Tennessee, the rest of VW's US lineup is made in Mexico. I think the Passat has a urea system for the diesels and there aren't many diesel Passats on the road (actually all Passats are selling like crap, for North America they remade the Passat bigger and took styling cues from a Camry. So for the same price you get all the blandness of a Camry combined with terribad VW reliability).

Always thought this Mercedes model looks like the old FX4 Taxi

Some people know no depths! I'm just glad I got the second email because I was ever so slightly tempted to reply.

The only thing I can think of is the buyer would raise a dispute with PayPal perhaps saying the car wasn't as described or something, and therefore mis-sold. PayPal is great for buying from dodgy people but I think it has its flaws.

Apparently the use of a " high jacked " PayPal account to buy things like cars is common mate, so someone else ends up paying for the car.

The other common methods are that they will say there's some kind of problem at your end and ask for your PayPal details to rectify it, then empty your account.

If you feel that something is dodgy it probably is !

Interesting. Thanks for the info!

I think some of the best advice in this situation is only accept cash or a bank transfer. They could be forged notes though? I'm getting paranoid now!

A bankers draft can also be forged too !.

Bank transfer is the safest.

However if your going to accept cash or a bankers draft, ask them to bring photo ID and some kind of proof of address - utility bill etc. If they arrive in a car I always try and take a photo of it on the sly too, as the reg is a good starter for the Police if it does turn dodgy.

Always have someone with you if there's cash involved and also never ever meet at somewhere like a car park !.
Get them to come to you, your in control of the situation then.

I've sold lots of cars and so far haven't any real problems other than time wasters .

@the esk - yes mate it's highly likely that others have gone down the same path. The urea systems (SCR) are virtually exclusively manufactured by Bosch. So if I'd say there's probably a few other nervous manufacturers out there. I'd be amazed if this was unique to VW.

Cheers mate.

I never think twice about giving my friends my account number and sort code, but a total stranger? I suppose there's now an awful lot they can do without your card number etc.... or can they? I should really know this!

You're right to be cautious as there are a lot of wronguns out there. What I always do is ask them to come to my bank with me and transfer the cash there. The bank is about 5 mins away. Someone who is genuine won't have a problem with this.

From experience a genuine buyer will ask to look at the car first and then return to buy it if they want it. Unless your selling a real banger, people don't normally buy a car on first viewing, as they normally want to get it HPI'd ( check that it's not stolen, has outstanding finance / written off and repaired etc ).

If a person wants the car after looking at it, explain to them that you want the money transferred at your bank when they buy it. That way they can bring the relevant banking docs, cards etc with them when they buy it.

This is for your protection and theirs - anyone who refuses is a wrongun !

Bank transfer I tried doing this when I bought a rover P6. The fella saw me do the necessary on my smartphone. 10 minutes later the money wasn't in his account, but he was happy for me to drive away (just as well as I was 90 miles from home).

The money wasn't there next morning either, and he was clearly getting worried. Turns out my bank had blocked the transfer as they feared fraud. They didn't think to contact me and ask though, so it took a proper fuming phonecall to them the next day to get the transaction completed.

Bankers - some quality service right there "for my protection".

On the off chance, do you know if the Storm is still for sale ?

I've always been in the market for one, as I'm a massive classic VW fan ( I'm about to add a third to two that I already have )

I had a TT 180 convertible and hated it, as it was so perfect !. It just had no character and was so bland. Don't get me wrong it was a beautiful car, but I just didn't enjoy driving it and got shut of it after 18mths and bought another Golf Gti instead !
Definitely not my friend, it was at least a couple of yeas ago.

The Storm has well gone mate. I'm talking at least a couple of years ago, maybe more. It's a shame about the timing of our conversation because I would've certainly of given you the heads up on it.
Anyway, I agree about the 4 pot TT. I test drove one and it like you say, pretty bland. You'll probably find most Audi drive like that. The VR6 3.2 is where they do roar into life, bit like its mate in the r32.
Thought the DSG really suited the car imho, hard downshifts sounding very similar to the R8 V10 plus advert, bloody amazing!

Boss car that mate, love it.
