I've seen Cahill thrive in a 442 as well, when Vaughan and AJ played up front (season before last). It does depend a little on quality in the rest of the midfield (i.e. no Phil Neville), but if you watch Tim carefully, he very seldom wastes the ball, and his first touch is a lot better than some realize. He doesn't do the fancy stuff a la Arteta, but he is a lot more effective in central midfield than most other options we've had in recent years.

And doesn't matter who has the armband, he's the leader on the field.

Cahill never played centre midfield when Vaughan and AJ where the strikers, Manny and Carsley did if I remember correctly.

Cahill is a decent box to box midfielder in a 4-4-2, nothing special just does a job. We have alot better options in Osman, Arteta, Fernandes, Moutinho or anyone else where going to get.

He's not creative, he's not a ball winner and he won't open up teams. Cahill has a tendency to run out of position and leaves gaps in the midfield which means he'd need a ball winner in midfield. Cahill and a defensive midfielder= all workrate, agression and tenacity and no composure, intelligence and creative ability.

If we set up like that we'd be one dimensional and the strikers would only get service from the flanks which doesn't work.

I don't see the point in playing Cahill just for the sake of it. He's not the best option to have there and he shouldn't be played there. He should only be in a four man midfield if we are low on numbers. In a 4-5-1 he'd be in my team everytime.

He did play several times in central mid (with Cars) in 442, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I've seen him open up a defence on more than one occasion (including a special goal he made for Yak last season), and while he doesn't have Ossie's moves on the ball, he contributes a lot more in terms of defence and not being brushed off the ball by bigger players.

But it's academic anyway - we'll be playing 451 when he's available as that's our best formation, and oddly seems to suit Yak as well (which I never would have thought a year ago).
