I've seen Cahill thrive in a 442 as well, when Vaughan and AJ played up front (season before last). It does depend a little on quality in the rest of the midfield (i.e. no Phil Neville), but if you watch Tim carefully, he very seldom wastes the ball, and his first touch is a lot better than some realize. He doesn't do the fancy stuff a la Arteta, but he is a lot more effective in central midfield than most other options we've had in recent years.
And doesn't matter who has the armband, he's the leader on the field.
