The notion that the NFL, particularly at the offensive and defensive skills positions - which require many of the same attributes that would lend well to futbol - can get by on only athletic ability while lacking vision, awareness and intelligence is absolutely laughable.

Sheer athleticism will get you a college scholarship, *might* get you drafted or a try out on an NFL squad, but sure won't land you a job.

While futbol has a nice organic flow to it, football is a start-stop-start-stop tactical chess match, with both offenses and defenses calling plays based upon situation, each with myriad of options open to them, each attempting various efforts at subterfuge to discuss the intent. Each with 11 players with varying responsibilities who need to be able to read what the other side are doing based upon formation and situation. And not only their immediate responsibility as both sides line up, but they also need to recognize what is happening once the ball is snapped and if it differs from what was initially surmised, what their new responsibilities are, where they need to be, who or what zone they need to be covering.

I think abe here should spend the month of November working 20 hour days interning for Darth Hoodie, breaking down game film. Particularly now as he and Patricia work to rebuild that squad which over the summer went from Super Bowl winning defense to _efense.

Would some of these players moving to futbol guarantee the US would be battling Germany or Brazil for the Cup every four years?

NO.

And no one is saying that.

However if some of the NFL caliber players in positions with overlapping attributes were to put the same time into futbol that they have invested into training for football, our squad would definitely be a lot more competitive than it is now.

One other note here. Give us Yanks credit. Part of the reason we didn't make the cut is Costa Mexico took their feet off the gas and didn't play to potential, the most CONCACAF-Y goal ever and a gol fantasmo ... and everyone here is putting focus on where it belongs. Our own inability to beat the worst team in the hex. We screwed the pooch.

Seeing on my various South American futbol feeds and friends pages, Chilenos and a few whiny Paraguayans complaining about invoking some arcane clause because Peru and Colombia tied 1-1 in Lima, giving Colombia the last automatic berth and Peru the play-off. Allegedly it was collusion.

Keeping in mind, 7 teams were bunched up together, fighting for 2 automatic berths and one play. All 7 were involved in matches being played simultaneously:

Ecuador 1 - 3 Argentina (Messi sombrero tirck, on to the Copa)
Brasil 2 - 0 Chile (adios Chile)
Peru 1 - 1 Colombia (both goals in the second half)
Paraguay 0 - Venzuela 1 (Paraguay did worse than the US, lost at home to the worst team in a 10 team Confed in a must win. VZ scored around the 85th minute.)

Even if Colombia and Peru had colluded, had Chile and Paraguay won, BOTH Colombia and Peru would be on the outside looking in.

Had Colombia and Peru colluded, and Paraguay scored rather than conceded, Paraguay would be in, Colombia looking at the Playoff, and Peru out. Keep in mind, this contest was 0-0 84 minutes in, meaning still in doubt when Colombia and Peru allegedly colluded.

It was not in the interest of either club to collude, it defied all logic for Peru co even consider doing anything less than their best at home.

Both Chile and Paraguay lost must-win games.

Suck it up, muchachos and join the US, Holland, and anyone else that ended up on the fringe in the new Copa NIT

Don't play, nada, unless they're scouted out and someone else pays for their club team. (Dempsey)

There's no access to coaching unless you pay the costs of club teams. There's no culture to breed players in sandlot play. There's no access to playing fields without registering for a league, and even if you can do this can you get access to good coaching?

Culture is what will breed the game, but you can't buy culture. You can, however, pay for good coaching and better access to the sport for low income kids. This will take 2-3 generations to fix, the only question is whether we've actually begun the fix or not.

The USSF appears to lack any morality.

A CTE awareness campaign vs the NFL and allowing players to kneel seems the route to go.

Just highlighting the point regarding money with a sprinkling of sarcasm.

Admittedly my sense of humor hasn't been the greatest over the past couple days. I'm used to getting the crap kicked out of us at the World Cup, but they've always made it in my lifetime. And I'm even counting 98 when they were absolute garbage.
