I would say it’s not his it’s the clubs, why would we pay him for an extra year to settle his contract? That means we’re paying him to leave?
We're honouring the terms of his contract, he's entitled to it or whatever proportion thereof that was agreed between the club/player.

…i’m not defending it, but it only takes one every now and then and the strategy to bring in promising youngsters has been a success (Stones, DCL, Holgate et al).

From a purist perspective & feeding lower leagues, there will be plenty of our Academy products who have had lengthy careers in the game.
Stones and Holgate bought from Barnsley where they was developed, DCL from Sheffield United.
Surely the point of investing so much in underage players coaching is to produce players for your first team squad and not to produce League on and League two standard players. I get frustrated hearing about how great players are that are coming through from the youth teams only for them to fall short of even getting a first team slot.

You could be right mate but it makes no sense to me. If it’s to get him off the wage bill albeit small, the we might as well keep him because we’re basically paying him for next seasons services, so we gain or save nothing from it but just lose a player.

…if you read my post, that’s what I said; the strategy of buying the best young talent from elsewhere is productive.

I spent years watching our Academy teams, I can honestly say there’s only Rooney and to a lesser extent Osman that I saw at 15/16 & thought they would make it. I’ve seen lots of outstanding kids who I thought had a chance and I still see them now (I don’t watch nearly so much these days).

In the 60s so many local lads came through but that stream has been a trickle for a long time. I don’t think it’s coaching, I think it’s recruitment. Young talent is harder to find, kids don’t play footy to the extent we did. Not sure many top clubs are bringing kids through these days.

On the topic of the 400k fee, does anybody have a source for it?

The official site lists the fee as Undisclosed so it looks like the club received something at least. Can only assume this theory that the fee went to Beni has just come from a poorly written article/tweet so would be good to find that original source.

Bit of research led me to this tweet:

And this from Kirkbride's article:Screenshot_20210729-204649~2.webp

Pretty sure the tweet has misunderstood Kirkbride's article, although I'm not really sure what he's trying to say either.

Good to him up there in Scotland!

(did we get a few quid for him, or at least a pack of Cadbury mini-eggs?)
