Benefit Steet

Would you feel happier if you were given more freedom over where and how your taxes were spent?

Not much we can do Bruce, you said earlier the whole system is designed for the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer. I'm taking my own steps to change my life so that i'm earning a good wage for the rest of my life and can save for retirement on my own back.

It's really not a big deal if one is doing it. It is such a small percentage of overall benefits that it isn't worth mentioning. People get really angry about it being 'unfair' which is crazy when so little is unfair. People live in areas which mean they get worse hospitals so they are more likely to be mistreated, they have worse schools so have worse exam results - these directly affect everyone but it is benefits that gets people so annoyed and it's because it is easy.

I do have a problem with people from foreign countries coming here, claiming our benefits and sending them back to there own country whilst they have absolutely no intention of working. Yes I have a massive problem with that.

If you are looking for the perfect immigration system, where everyone is in full time education and none of them go to prison, then you'll be waiting forever, as it's neither possible or even reasonable to expect.

Immigrants should only be allowed if they are skilled workers, If they want benefits they should pay into the pot like everyone else. Any immigrants coming here shouldn't be allowed benefits for 3-5yrs. That's my opinion. I've been paying tax most of my adult life and I've been told tough, not on.

On average, European immigrants benefit the economy by £6,000 per head over the course of a 16 year period study between 1995 and 2011.

What you've just described is actually what is happening. The show you're linking to highlights the extreme minority and is scaremongering.

Tubey I'm not talking about those who contribute to the economy. I'm specifically talking about those who come here and claim benefits.

And I'm telling you they are a minority; a consequence of the system that allows the good to come in.

34% more contributed to the economy than they take out. 3% less likely to live in social housing than native Britons, 33% more likely to have a degree level education than a native Briton, 45% less likely to receive state benefits than a native Briton and overall they're a big net gain to our economy.

These are all facts. The focus on the minority is as ridiculous as taking an incident of knife crime in London and labelling all young blacks as thugs because of it.

And that's what scaremongering does - highlight the extreme lows to overwhelm the overall real picture. The Daily Mail has made a living from it.

I know they are a minority and I know that programs like that are designed to cause bad blood. The fact is it's happening. Why should we turn a blind eye to it?

Your knife crime point is ridiculous and irrelevant, why you brought that up I don't know.

The Benefits system is at breaking point. Yet people are allowed to claim for kids not even in this country. meanwhile disabled/poor people are having to pay bedroom tax to try and save some extra pennies.

Sorry but where does it end. We don't have a never ending tap of money to pay anyone and everyone who fancies coming to live here, specifically to claim benefits.

If you think it's irrelevant you haven't understood the valid comparison.

Massively beneficial migrants come to the UK every year and you don't hear of them, as they're quietly in good jobs, contributing to the system and breaking no laws. Take @DualityNSNO for example - a university student from Bulgaria, potentially benefiting this country in an area we have dwindling talent. This is the vast majority of immigration. They don't make the front pages of the Express and Mail.

Yet, when you get one Slovakian or Romanian family who make headlines for being on the extreme negative side of immigration, it tars the whole lot of them with the same brush. It's an easy get out clause for those unwilling to look at their own nation for problems. A scapegoat.

And that's where the comparison is. One black lad knifes someone in London, and "Britain's youth are out of control" is blazened across every newspaper. And do you know why? Because scaremongering sells papers, as gullible people eat it up without trying to understand deeper causes. It's why political parties woo The Sun, because they know the readers of the rag will take whatever they say on face value.

You speak of the benefit system being at breaking point. You speak of the Bedroom Tax. Do you know who causes the real damage to those systems? It's the education system which fails children too often in deprived areas, shovelling them out aged 16. It's the neglected mental health and family liaison systems that produce an endless stream of fated newcomers to the benefit lifestyle as they're given no hope or early intervention. It's the lack of opportunity in the jobs market, because young Brits aren't trained as apprentices in occupations that we have a skills drain in.

These are the deeper issues that should be given attention. But because it's easier to blame Igor for Romania rather than blame Alex from Stockport, then people take the easy way out.

Are you for real, why. Because it puts a massive strain on the economy, NHS, Schools, public services, not to mention over population. Look I didn't want a immigration debate this was about benefits.

British people who DON'T want to work are just as bad.

But it's just it is not that big a deal. Benefit cheats and 'undeserving' claimants account for such a small amount that it shouldn't get you angry.

this is not an immigration debate. It's about benefits. I have said more than once, I am talking about immigrants who come here SPECIFICALLY to claim benefits.

I have also said British people who refuse to work are just as bad. Take your blinkers off and read mate.

The education system is at breaking point because we are over populated mate same as the NHS and other public services.

And I'm telling you it's a minority. Of course it's an immigration debate if you're talking about immigrants!

If you shut down the current system too harshly as an alarmist and scaremongering approach to politics, then you hurt the net economy as you're overreacting to a small problem, which will in turn create a bigger problem.

Just because the Daily Mail and Express want to sell papers to you, it doesn't mean what they say is real. Papers exist to sell themselves - the "problem" you are so outraged about is so minute as to be not worth mentioning when considering the absolutely massive comparative benefits that come along with it.
