Bad ref decisions - for and against - season 2025/26

So players can stud rake our players calves and achilles and get thrown a parade for the effort.
A slew of soft penalties that've since dried up applied to just us.
League leaders kick ours in the box and no going.
Then, we get a red for a slap, our player slaps our defender.
The same defender gets a red for pulling a hair bobble.
Then a superstar midfielder gets a red for clapping his hands.

Who needs enemies.

He's challenging for the ball.
The hair pull was a split second and didn't seem melicious or violent to me. It could even have been accidental as he's looking at the ball and grappling the player (standard stuff).

It's a foul, it's probably a yellow, but it's not a red. In real time I had no idea what I was even looking at. It was very innocuous. It certainly wasn't an off the ball aggressive pull.

Nothing on MOTD about that "challenge" on Armstrong of course after both of the kopites agreeing 100% with the decisions against us🙄

Because it clearly wasn't violent conduct

He didn't even mean it and there was hardly any force. It also wasn't off the ball - Keane is challenging for a header in normal play.

I'm equally baffled by some of our fans who are so adamant it was a red card. Its honestly one of the worst decisions since VAR was created.

He's got a handful of the lads braids. Whether he meant it and it was just instinct, it doesn't matter. He held them, gave it a tug, won a header.

Wed be livid if the same thing happened to one of ours and they got away with it.

No player should be getting sent off for that last night, whether it was our player or theirs. Ridiculous over-officiating and misinterpretation on the laws/guidance.

What’s it come to that people want players sent off for that?!

I wouldn’t describe the hair pull as violent or even aggressive - more just a bit silly or childish?

I agree 100% it’s a foul and should be a yellow but I just don’t see what makes it a red card offence and now a 3-game suspension

One of their lads planted his studs into the calf of one of ours, absolutely nowhere near the ball but that was fine apparently. And the Brentford attackers against us last weekend did at least half a dozen more dangerous and cynical challenges in aerial duels with our defenders which they consistently got away with

I remember the one the other week at home against Forest when Tarkowski barged into the back of a Forest player in an off the ball incident which VAR had a look at and didn’t think anything of it and the Liam Delap one the other day where he forced a City player to collide at speed into the advertisement boards when the ball had already gone out of play

Why does VAR deem a little tug on the hair a more violent or dangerous action than all of these?

THIS is a hair pull.. no action taken...

No, Cristian Romero was not booked for pulling an opponent's hair at the time the incident occurred.
The incident in question occurred in August 2022 during a Premier League match between Tottenham and Chelsea, where Romero pulled the hair of Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.
  • On-field Decision: The referee, Anthony Taylor, did not call a foul.
  • VAR Decision: The Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Mike Dean, reviewed the incident but did not deem it a red card offense or recommend a pitchside review. Play continued, and Tottenham scored a crucial equalizer from the resulting corner kick.
  • Aftermath: The decision caused significant controversy. Mike Dean later admitted he made a mistake and that he should have recommended a review, which would likely have resulted in a red card for Romero for violent conduct and a free-kick for Chelsea.
  • No Retrospective Action: Because the VAR officially looked at the incident at the time, no retrospective action or booking could be issued after the match.

It should have been red as Mike Dean admitted. But again, the big difference between the two (other than the force of the tug) is that Romero wasn't challenging for the ball.

The "challenging for the ball" aspect has to there to remove some of the subjectivity of determining a player's intent. The referee doesn't need to determine if Keane intended to pull hair to determine a red card offense, he just needs to determine if he's competing for the ball.

Players often put their hand on an opponent’s shoulder, back, grab a handful of shirt whilst challenging for a header for leverage or stability. I suspect Keane’s hand just landed on the players hair, being long, and that’s about it. There was no aggression or violence in the action whatsoever. Three game ban would be a joke. Appeal is a must
