Transfer Rumour Ashley Young

He's definitely, if he legs still work, a better full-back than most of what we have but we'll get like, what, one season out of him? It's just a band aid fix. Plus I bet his wages are stupid for his age. If the club's plan is to just patch us up every Summer in the hope we finish 17th then they're going the right way.

Yeah, the wages would be one of my biggest concerns. If we are genuinely looking for a utility player who can cover full back positions and (at a stretch) the wide positions, then ok, but it's one year and then we'd need to assess next summer - maybe there's an expectation that with so many deals being up next year (Alli, Doucoure, Coleman, Iwobi, Gray, Gomes, Gbamin etc) and having three full seasons of staying within ffp guidelines, there will be wiggle room to manoeuvre next year so a sticking plaster is all we need for 12 months in this area.

Ok, if we assume for a moment that Everton are forward-thinking enough to plan that far ahead then fine.

But it's still Ashley Young. So no.

I can remember Moyes bringing in Lucas Neil outside of the transfer window because nobody had offered him a contract. He did alright.

For me, a good indicator of a player’s quality can be found on their previous clubs fan forum, it normally shows whether they are disappointed or happy to see them leave.

Many Villa fans thought he was worth another year. Similar to how people on here, and Everton themselves, think Coleman is worth another year.

He’s a useful utility player that will prevent us from facing the same ‘no fullbacks’ situation that we faced against Bournemouth on the last day. He will prove a useful addition should we sign him, imo.

Honestly think anyone who watched him play last season would think he adds and likely improves us mate. I don’t think this thread is a refection of Young as a player.

People are just annoyed as they want to build for the future, be excited to develop a player and hope again - nothing wrong with that.

This won’t be that, it will will be a fix for a season.

But he’s someone who improves on what he had and that’s the only game in town.

We can sign someone who improves us and be disappointed with their profile - this thread is just a reaction of how quickly you can engage your realism and reconcile those competing needs.

There are plenty of examples around football of clubs bringing older players such as Silva at Chelsea and Larsson at Utd who were both 36.

I never liked Ashley Young and I don't think I ever will but he was a good player who had a decent season last year

I honestly though It was a joke or just fake news when I saw this. But a thread with 50 pages on a 38 year old Ashley Young. It's just confirmation of the pitiful position that this club is in right now.

I genuinely thought there would be a loosening of the profit and sustainability rules this season that would enable us to spend. But why is there apparently zero money.

I don't dispute that maybe young had a good season last year. But its a transfer that sends so many negative messages. The club still havnt spent a penny yet on positions we really need and it doesn't even look like it is going to either.
