Arteta interview (recent)

Using the players around him whilst here as a yardstick, he was certainly more accomplished than most.

I felt, however, that he didn't turn up often enough in the bigger games, to the extent that Cahill, of far more modest talent, did.

Overall a decent enough servant although I couldn't warm to him personally.

He wouldn't feature in any variation of a Best XI of my choosing, but I don't have strong opinions about him either way, all the best to him.

dave you've contradicted yourself

you just said he wanted to leave for 2 years, but DIDNT down tools

now your saying he was sold because he wanted to leave and moyes didn't want a not committed player? by that logic he should have been sold 2 years earlier should he not

It`s not contradiction mate, it`s called " flip flopping ".

He has " fluid " agendas, that can change if and when the parameters change.

Basically, it allows him to never ever be wrong lol

Well you recollection is mistaken, he dominated countless matches. If we’re comparing him to every midfielder in history then yes he’s not a great player. If we’re comparing him to Everton premier league midfielders then he’s our greatest by a mile.

Gulliver was a giant in Lilliput.

Spot on mate.

I have no idea how the feller gets feted as much as he does. When he left and wenbt to Arsenal and played for them you could see what a limited player he was, which is why Wenger played him as a water carrier for far more talented players.

He was never the same after his cruciate injury, couldn’t even get a free kick over the wall or a corner past the first man. We had him for his best years and he was never the same player after that especially at arsenal.

Interesting listening to him talk about his move to Arsenal. He forgot to mention he handed in a transfer request with just a few hours left in the transfer window; meaning we had no time to get in a replacement. I don’t resent him for moving to Arsenal - he’s right, he had given us seven years’ excellent service, and Everton was then a club standing still - it was how he went about it.
Bizarre comment which absolves the real villain in this transfer - Kenwright. We had to sell the player as the bank told us we had to raise a certain amount of money. Arteta chose to forego his cut of the deal to save Everton money. Kenwright was at fault for all of this and not Arteta.

Your mind must be playing tricks on yiou. Arteta's signature pass was to recieve the ball and look sideways to Pienaar or Baines ALL THE TIME.

I can remember one match when he took control of the game and started playing forward passes: an away match at Villa that we won easily enough. That is about it though. He was the ultimate crab passer...which is why I stated earlier that Roberto would have loved him in his team.

I have seen you write some crap on here dave... but that’s the biggest pile yet

This ^^^^ all our best players put in transfer requests , this is something bill makes them do imo to save his own reputation .

You're reading what you want to be there rather than what is there. I said he dominated one match in my recollection.

He was a quality player but not a great one. His game was very simple.

For a couple of seasons , right up to that Newcastle game which finishes him, he was a complete midfielder. I wouldn’t have sold him for 50m , in the end I was more than happy with 10

I don't have a problem with how he left. We were in a horrendous state at the time and hadn't kicked on at any point Arteta had been playing his best football. He'd given us his best years and it was mental enough that a player of his ability was going to go his entire career without an international cap, let alone not getting to play CL football.

The deal went through late because Arsenal knew they could squeeze us us as we were completely desperate. The idea that Arteta should have stayed and denied himself the chance to play CL football because we were going to struggle to get a replacement in (would we even have spent the money anyway?) is a bit silly.

No one was upset at him until his goal celebration in the cup game. There was really no good reason to be pointing to the badge etc, but I think he just didn't get that that could upset anyone. He then got a rough reception in the 3-0 game and had blues taking the mick later on after the game, after he was good enough to take photos with them, which I thought was a bit far.

He clearly enjoyed his time here immensely and looks back on games like Fiorentina and United fondly. He also didn't take the stick he got when he came back personally. He's alright by me.
