Ready for the push? I'd say the only goal of the youth teams is to develop players for either the first team or at least a senior career. Trophies are irrelevant imo.

A successful youth team is far better than unsuccessful one, winning becomes a mentality. It's something that has been missing from Everton for years, always a "at least you tried" attitude, not for me. The kids need to learn how to win

Hmm, not sure I'd agree with that Bruce.

If Unsy can get the young 'uns winning trophies, it'll help breed and instil the winning mentality that's needed in the first team at the highest level.

Look at the German national teams, their young 'uns win most of the tournaments they go into and then when they step to senior level, they perform and invariably go deep into or win World Cups.

Nowt better than a winning attitude and habit ;)

The thing is, at youth level, winning can often be as much down to the physical development of the youngster as it is their skill levels, and it's a long running accusation in English football that a focus on winning at youth level contributes to the picking of big lumps who thrive at youth level but struggle at senior level when their size is no longer a factor.

That's not to say that this is what Unsworth is doing of course, but I wouldn't want to see us go down that path.

This 100%, plus unsie has already pushed through 8 debutantes in the past 18 months so why not give him a bit of lee way to go out and make the u23s better by bringing a player or 2 in.
If the u23s are not producing good enough players in a certain position, what is the problem in strengthening that position?

I agree that physicality plays apart, but we're talking about young men rather than 12-15 year olds. They're an arms shot away from PL football and need to understand what winning is.

Desire to want to win and knowing what the feeling is like can give you that extra 10%

As long as the primary emphasis is development of our own, one or two young additions from elsewhere is fine by me too ;)
