8-1 against, 1 abstained.
They're scared of something.
I wonder, can't see the corbyn faithful knifing him, but can see rayner, streeting, and reeves not wanting him in the way. streeting seems like a watered down version of very nasal ed, and I wonder if the lesson of Harris might be in the air re the ladies vs farage. Something is in play, what is bubbling away in his lordships closet that is yet to spring...

Blessing in disguise. A load of MPs will jack it in before the next election, Burnham can pick up a safe seat and run for party leader then. If you go in now and split the party, don't expect to have a happy ending.

It will let him be able to run on a unity message when the time comes and start from a more stable foundation.

The Labour Party are really really bad at politics as has been shown by many of their policy decisions and now this .
Deeply frustrating with such a majority to see them routinely cave to outside right wing pressure and self preservation (which will ironically finish them). Like with most issues centralists are like the blind man with the elephant, they have their hand on the problem but they can't see how big it is.

They're going to lose that by election in Denton now Whoever is parachute in will be labelled a Starmer stooge and the Greens will benefit

Local elections will probably see a lot of success for the Greens and it'll be a surprise if Starmer makes it to the Summer break.

Best option for him now would be to overrule the NEC and let Burnham stand. Might make him look like more of a leader and make it trickier for Burnham to run against him at a later date.

Mostly this. It makes sense to stir the pot at this time, there's a void Corbyn/Sultana haven't filled and gnarlsed up, Polanski is reaping that.
He's put the idea of a Starmerless party on the agenda, Streeting especially as the self thought of 'heir apparent', must be panicking.
