2020/21 Andre Gomes

There is a hope that a better player is hidden within, I think there is, there must be to an extent, but not to the level we would need.

I can see him going on loan eventually, and either going on a succession of loans, or settling with one club where a loan deal is extended.

It has always seemed credible to me that he was tagged on by Barca to the Mina and Digne deals, and we looked at it and thought why not, with a bit of TLC, he can flourish here.

Its easy to see how they would think that, and understandable, he was considered a hot property at Benfica, and obviously did something to draw Barcelona's attention to them. There is no shame at all in failing there.

The crux came at the end of his loan period. I could see a case for extending the loan, but not a compelling case for a permanent transfer. Like a lot of our players, he was talked up completely out of proportion. We have a low bar, and he flashed a bit of leg here and there, on the pitch, metaphorically speaking.

I imagine that Ancelotti has seen this occur over and over, and he will be earmarked to be moved aside, if not moved on.

I thought he was decent in the post-lockdown game at Sheff Utd, but I'm struggling to think of any other game since, that he could have been said to have any impact on. It's not like he was particularly good in that game either, or had the gall to score or assist (imagine). So yes, its bad, average, poor, whatever you want to call it.

I think the idea that we got him because of his problems at Barcelona was what we told ourselves to convince us that it was a great deal. We said that he was a wonderful player who’d lost his way at Barcelona because of personal problems, but with a bit of TLC he’d be a £50m player at half the price. I argued for a long time that he was a really talented player who just wasn’t showing it, but after 2 1/2 years watching him I’m not sure that’s really the case. The more I watch him the more I think he isn’t actually that talented after all. He has good technical ability - his touch is good, his passing is nice etc - but he doesn’t seem to have much in his locker that actually influences a game of football.
Yes, I think that's hard to argue with. I'm not a great believer in players just needing the right manager to transform from ridiculed outcast to world-beater, so I had low expectations of Gomes when he arrived. He was easily the worst player I have seen playing for Barcelona this century. That's probably a harsh viewpoint, as plenty have failed there, but certainly I hadn't seen a Barcelona player look quite so completely out of place in so much as he looked like a pub player surrounded by world stars any time I watched them play. He stuck out - the kind of player who, for whatever reason, infuriated me when I watched him play. Every time he got the ball, the fabled Barcelona system broke down, collapsed, and blushed in embarrassment. So him coming to Everton never looked that smart a move to me.

Gomes, to me, is like McGeady and Iwobi - players who I adamantly felt, as they put pen to contract, were just not up to it, no matter how "stylish" their admirers/apologists claimed they were. It was never going to work out. Iwobi, when he was at Arsenal, had the very same effect on me. I can't stand Arsenal, yet I'd get irritated when I'd see this one player stink the place out and ruin a good move simply for lack of brain or idiotic decision making.

Everton fans have big notions now that we have a world-class manager and a serious board behind us. And it's great to see. However, if we expect to challenge the top six, we need to ask ourselves if our players would get into top six sides. Would Andre Gomes get into a top six side? I think we all know the answer to that. He might make our side now and then until Carlo can get his own men in, but we'll probably end up about 9th due to a lack of squad depth and the need to play the likes of Gomes one too many times.

Now I’m not usually one for stats or anything like that but aside from Davy Klaassen who is on his own plane of existence Gomes can be far off from statistically being one of the worst CM’s we have ever had can he?

He is not doing himself any justice at the moment. As much as I love him he is not producing, Looking like his injury and taken him back a lot. Carlo will not put up with it much longer

He needs to stay physically strong and protect the ball he used to be. Seems like he loses a yard of pace but needs to pass the ball forward a lot more than the usual back pass and sideway pass.
