I'm a bit uncomfortable with the whole mental health angle about him. It's as if people have decided that he suffers terribly from mental health related issues, but there's no evidence of that at all. He gave one interview in which he was more candid than most footballers are, and said he'd felt a bit rubbish about how bad he was playing and didn't really want to go out in Barcelona because of it. It's entirely possible that he was suffering from serious issues, but it's also possible that he just didn't really fancy getting heckled while he was having his dinner and so thought he'd stay at home. It's a big leap that people have made.
He, by his own admission, effectively had a meltdown in Barcelona. That's why we got him. He was run out of Catalunya, ridiculed and considered the worst player ever to play for that club by many. Even if we put that aside and say it was one of those things rather than a mental health issue, his performances since at this club show him to be a failed signing. Whether that's because he has mental health issues or not is almost beside the point. He hasn't performed. In some ways, I think people are trying to be gentle with him when putting his utter failure to perform down to mental health issues. I'm sure the club will do their best for him if he has issues, but the world moves on. If he can't perform, for whatever reason, we need to look elsewhere while doing our best for him.

I wouldn't be amazed if he has mental health issues, but that's conjecture. The evidence before my eyes suggest he lacks the necessary intangible attributes to be an effective Everton player. I don't see desire, courage, or bloody-mindedness. Maybe he suffers from a lack of character or personality on the pitch. Who knows? I'm not a doctor and I'm not diagnosing him. I just don't think he's good enough to play for a team with ambition.

I do feel for him if he has mental health issues or if he hasn't recvered properly from his injury. But if either of those are true then he shouldn't be starting until he's got them right (with the help of the club).

But even in his "good" season he was a bit of a 1 in 6 player. He had that good game at Anfield but there were plenty of stinkers too.

Imagine how hard it'll be for the 14 year Russian lad who'll be compiling the Andre Gomes Skills, Goals & Assists 2019/20 YouTube montage this year.

Maybe it'll be easy actually, it'd be like 4 seconds long.
The kid will just make a 2003 peak Scot Gemmill montage and nobody will notice the difference

I do sympathize with him as i know how hard it can be and i also know what it can be like to have a serious injury (i have shattered my leg before) but the issue with Andre is that he seems to have always had these problems and has moved around various clubs in a hope that a manager/club may help him solve them but without success so far. At what point do you ask the question (i don't want to because he obviously does have some talent) is he maybe just not cut out for the rigors of top level sportsmanship.

I think the idea that we got him because of his problems at Barcelona was what we told ourselves to convince us that it was a great deal. We said that he was a wonderful player who’d lost his way at Barcelona because of personal problems, but with a bit of TLC he’d be a £50m player at half the price. I argued for a long time that he was a really talented player who just wasn’t showing it, but after 2 1/2 years watching him I’m not sure that’s really the case. The more I watch him the more I think he isn’t actually that talented after all. He has good technical ability - his touch is good, his passing is nice etc - but he doesn’t seem to have much in his locker that actually influences a game of football.

In his loan spell he was our best midfielder by some distance .

I don't recall anyone being anything other than happy at his permanent signing with comments like " Brands is a genius to get him for only £25 million".

After his permanent deal he was very in and out with more bad games than good. I can't ever recall with the possible exception of a game against the RS him dominating in midfield.

Since his injury he has been a poor imitation of a professional footballer. I don't know if it is physical or mental but he looks completely finished.

Agree.

I am the last one to stigmatize mental illness. It’s an illness like any physical illness. If - big if - this is an issue I will support him but he shouldn’t be playing until it’s addressed, just like any other health issue.

Im not sure if lack of conviction is a mental illness. Whatever you call it, he’s timid.
