City do it with who? Fernandinho was good without the ball and Rodri isn't nearly as bad as Andre plus switching to Rodri has made their team well worse.

RS don't yet. We will see if they do with Thiago but somehow I doubt it.

It isn't common but Jorginho is a top level passer and always makes himself an option. That isn't Andre.

I'm not comparing the quality of the players, more the idea for the type of player. Largely possession based sides.

It's not Gomes's game anyway. Used to watch Barca a lot and you wouldn't notice he was playing. Xavi, he wasn't. He's a nothing player.

He can pass reasonably, but that should be a bare minimum for any midfielder in the modern game.

I'm not sure what other qualities he has though. He's very slow, doesn't really get around the pitch well, not great off the ball. He's a more exotic Tom Davies.

Course he can. He's got bags of ability. He's not cut for English football though.

Dont get any good performances from him when Allan is in the team either. Can't actually remember his last good performance.

That doesn’t mean anything, Barca have made loads of crap signings in the last few years. They signed Martin Braithwaite ffs. Gomes has no range of passing whatsoever, he can play safe passes to his midfield partner and that’s about it. Never links the play between midfield and attack, when he tries to ping a diagonal out wide half the time it goes out for a throw in. I think it’s time we accepted he isn’t a very good player.

A pivot player doesn't spend most of the game chasing shadows or winning the ball back as a sole job.

Of course Barca have signed some guff. But their level of guff is not ours so there's some standards. Countinho was a bad buy for them for eg but doesn't make him a poor player.

And again, not saying he's not been performing but if you rewatch the first couple of games of the season, Allan and Doucoure would sweep up, Gomes would mainly make the play out wide to Rodriguez or Richy in good attacking areas for them cause damage. Doucoure would arrive late to support. He has a good passing range. He's just not on form and in and out the team.

It's about balance. Without it we look poor due to depth. We've zero cover for Allan and Doucoure. Either of those two go out.. we'll struggle.

Not really. See Iwobi. The modern game is more about athleticism than ability now
