I read on the BBC that Americans don't eat much lamb. Is that true?
Not common on the south that I am aware of.

This. Never ate much (heck, any) of it growing up. I recall being told what we could get was expensive and not very good.
With all the great local seafood down here, I never missed it that much.
Most of the lamb in the USA got eaten out west where it was more available and local, I think. If I'm wrong, someone will tell me. Like everything else it's much easier to find these days, though still relatively expensive.
