And Sonoran Dogs & Fajitas certainly are American food.
Outside of BBQ - our slow and low, 12+ hour kinds, not just meat on a grill for a couple minutes - most the rest of our stuff is just stuff that immigrants brought here and we just twisted our own way and blew it the heck up. It's what we do.
See also - the Pizza explosion. It was a food our soldiers ate while in Italy at the tail end of WW2. They liked it, it was cheap, easy. They wanted it when they got back and what was just a (admittedly, properly and expertly done) local thing there turned into the big rage and helped blow it up all over this country, then more abroad. At least that was the story one of our history/food porn channels showed of the evolution of that food.
