American Food

As someone who's never been that far N/W, why should I visit SJI (or even Seattle) over Vancouver? Can I get a brief Azul-like trip advisor for the Vancouver-Seattle area?
Orcas.

Depends on what you want I guess. I haven't been up to Vancouver yet, though I've been to SJI so I can't really compare...but SJI are going to be better for wildlife (orcas!) and ya know being out in the ocean. Vancouver will probably have more stuff to do that isn't just getting outside and seeing amazing things.

Why Seattle over Vancouver? I can't compare the two since I haven't been to Vancouver - but Seattle is really nice for a city. Clean, SHOCKINGLY friendly, legal stuff for recreation, Pike Place is a neat touristy thing, pretty good beer (although I think RDU had a better microbrew scene if I'm completely honest).

So less about the comparison, but I vouch for Seattle as the best American city I've been to thus far.

Seattle has a huge Microbrew scene. One of the biggest in the nation. Think most lists have it in the top 5. Portland is the king though.

Too IPA dependant. There doesn't seem to be the variety of quality we had in NC.

Good, just too much of the same.

Give it another look mate. The beer scene is top notch. Not a knock on RDU, but it's pretty universally accepted as boss. The Elysian is a good spot on Capitol Hill. Pyramid isn't too far from you. Did the tour there midweek...it was me and a mate on the tour. We had so much and the guide took many liberties since it was just him and the two of us.

I have a soft spot for The Six Arms...it's a PDX based place, but one of my brother's best friends used to manage it. He died of cancer in his early 30's. The Glen Burger is still on the menu.

Good music...good beer...where's Waldo with crows. They are everywhere.

First impressions of course, but a place can be hugely rated on the back of great IPA's because of the current love-in with that style. But based on a small sample size almost everything here is throwing in with the hopfest.

I suppose I don't count places like Pyramid, because they're nationally available. In my previous town of 17k people we had three decent sized microbreweries, and with a good variety of stylistic choices.

I haven't, for example, found a good small microbrewed Dubbel, bock or hefe. That said, I'm still new and hope to find my initial impressions incorrect.

Rainier is the best cheap American style lager out there though.

I do wonder now if the issue is the age of the scene. Seattle has been doing this longer and has a more mature scene, but that loses some of the magic to me.

Fair point on your last one. It is a mature scene. Pyramid was a pioneer. Still had a boss time on the tour. Their alehouse in SoDo used to be their headquarters...moved out your way when they gained more regional/national exposure.

Still plenty of good locals. I can't speak to your area much. I know the city proper much better than where you are.
