Professor Toffee
On and on, over the hill and the craic is good
I'm sure it's lovely serenity but it does look a tiny bit like sick !This is a very Southern dish, but never had it until last week: rice, corn, chicken tenders, ham gravy

I'm with Foot long it's the eyes for me, I have a really keen sense of smell and I always plonk my nose in wondrous complex dishes but I think all food can look like an amazing work of art. Love the look of itNever, never; the nose is what leads you to good food

Except that corn thing![]()
That's because of how it looks lol , I give you the corn above lolVisual presentation goes a long way (the French have done very well with food, no doubt), but for America's Southern food, it has to smell good first and foremost.

There's a lot to be said for presentation, but I eaten some very pretty or great looking food that tasted bad or at best bland.
Good smelling food is not going to disappoint.
Yeah I agree but it can look like sick , I can't eat something that me eyes tell me not toThere's a lot to be said for presentation, but I eaten some very pretty or great looking food that tasted bad or at best bland.

I am actually salivating mmmmHam I am. That last one is killing me. Here's the double down Ralphie deluxe from Maple Street Biscuits.
(two over medium on sausage gravy on biscuit) Tastes better than it looks. World class sausage gravy, here. Not more than once a month.

I have this real thing about eating in other people's houses in case I don't like the food and I hate to offend etc
In restaurants I can send it back but that doesn't really work in friends houses
Okey doke it's a deal, and if I'm ever cooking for you remind me to distract you while I order the IndianI get it, (I have some weird food texture issues) but to southern eyes that are used to having gravy of all sorts poured on anything and everything, that looks good.
If I'm ever cooking for you, remind me to make you shut your eyes and taste it before I let you open them. lol

Great food looks fantastic on the plate, is perfectly cooked and has the right balance of seasoning, preparation techniques and ingredients to take the dish from a plate of decent fodder into something memorable. American cuisine lacks the subtlety of flavour and presentation to compete with the best we can muster on this side of the pond (and I don't mean bleeding France either ffs) Harsh but true.
You've just agreed with me, without realising it..........Sorry sweetie, you are completely wrong.
A lot of what we've posted hasn't been plated up nice and fancy, but could be and you'd sing a different tune. I'm sure there are retaurants in NY or other big cities that do "southern" food plated up very pretty and sophisicated.
That's not they way it's done in the south. The south is lot of things, having pretentious food is not one of them.
