'They are referred to as a plural' By the fans in general (including me). But the grammatically correct form is 'Everton is top of the league'.I had an argument with an English teacher about that a few weeks ago. She insisted its Everton IS top of the league as it refers to a singular team but a football club is referred to as plural as it is a collective term.
