A lot of this depends on the manger mate.

Under Lampard I agree. Sean Dyche hasn't and I doubt ever will play with a traditional playmaker.

But I agree, he isn't the 'playmaker' in that traditional sense. He is creative, but it's an erratic type of creation and that means you're never sure what you're going to get.

Not sure about that mate, Burnley played with Defour, Hendricks and Ashley Westwood at different points. Depends if you see a playmaker as a 10 or more deeper. He played Cornet at 10 a fair bit last season too.

Cornet not a playmaker never has been. Definitely not as good in that regard as Iwobi either.

Defour, Westwood etc were combative midfielders with an eye for a pass. So yeah not something we have in the ranks atm but not traditional playmaker types either.

Everton definitely lack a player to control the tempo of the game so in that sense I agree, and Iwobi won't be that. I do think he's a good asset though. Seven assists and a goal this season, we can't be actively stripping that from a team that so struggles to create. He's the best of a bad bunch in that regard.

Cornet played support striker toward the end of last season mate, his goal Vs us indicative of same, call it 10 if you like, in the way Cahill used to play 10 arriving late, but I take your point he relies more on athetisism then creativity. Just pointing out that Dyche has cards up his sleeve through the central midfield channel creatively.

We’re down to definition now, i think you could equally argue Iwobi has an eye for a pass rather then being creative, I think most would put Defour ahead of Iwobi as a playmaker, Defour absolutely was incidentaly.

Don’t get me wrong, I know we need him now, but come the summer, we have a choice we either sell or give him a new deal, he’s a player we need to move on and try to improve on, he’s poor and lacks any control in his game and doesn’t influence this team enough for his cost - he costs us a lot of money. Under Dyche he’s either playing out on the flank or he’s on the bench - can we get a better winger for his cost, I definitely think we can. He’s looking for a similar contract to someone like James Maddison, no chance.

It’s a sell for me, to improve we have to loose the Iwobi’s of this world.

Of course we should sell Iwobi. Now I'm not one of those people who think Iwobi is a really bad footballer, but he's not a very good one either. He's a footballer who doesn't really have any particular strengths - that's a big problem when you're one of the highest paid.

Oh yeah absolutely I see what you mean there. Not really talking about formations, just in the type of player he plays central it's never been your player who necessarily takes control of a game though Defour as you mentioned has that passing ability. He was never a '10' but could control the pace of a match. FWIW I think we have someone similar in passing sense in Onana but he has a long way to go.

I don't think we should look to keep letting go of our better players when we have so much dross tbh. Iwobi works tirelessly (should be a minimum) and plays to the maximum in that regard wherever he plays on the pitch - whether that's midfield, right wing, left wing, right wing-back etc. I don't think that's a player we should look to get rid of (unless we go down and we have to) but likewise I wouldn't be offering him a bumper new deal.

But he's a lot more deserving of a new deal than Gordon was, for example.

I hate him and think hes rubbish, but there is nobody he should be dropped for.

It was the same with Gana, people saying he should be taken out the side, for who? Tom Davies??????

I don't see how you could hate Iwobi to be honest

He's hardly a cretin

Yeah, he hasn't been amazing recently, but he's put the effort in and I think his badness has been exaggerated in all honesty

Its actually Garner i hope will fill that role mate, i think he has the closest skill set to be able to it - allbeit he has a lot to prove to. Gomes in his first year did it.

We would disagree there, i think hes one of our best players - because the bar is so low. Its like when we were poor in the early noughties and Joseph Yobo was by far our best player - as we developed, evolved and improved he was surplus to requirements - thats what we have to aim for - to improve and Iwobi to my mind isnt part of that. Part of my reasoning is his cost - its not like he was Gordon who cost us about 800k a year - Iwobi costs us 10.96 million a year in wages and ammortisation - he just doesn't justify that to me. Hes supposed to be a 32 mill pound footballer - hes taking up that resource and is not carrying that cost in terms of influence - certainly over the 4 years hes been here. Im all for keeping our best players, i said it about Lukaku, Richarlrson and Gordon - stupid selling them. But Iwobi do i think we can get a better more influential player for 11 mill a season - i definitely do.

We can all get behind the maximum effort piece, its seductive as blues, but it has to be backed up by consistent ability and consistent impacting games and in game control - for his cost he doesn't give us that. Its just business and clinical non sentimental decision making. We have to judge his worth on being a 32 million pound footballer and costing us 11 mill a year ~(and hes looking for 100k a week) - he doesn't justify that.

So id look to move him on - i suspect Dyche may as well.

Yep Garner definitely long term but Onana is a fantastic possession player. It's just merging that with his physical attributes.

Iwobi has provided this year. He's pretty high in the league for chance creation, vast majority of those from open play, and has six league assists, T4 in the league. He needs to score more - but same for all of our players. Compare that to Gordon who has no assists and has created fewer than 20 chances for example, and has lost the hard work ethic that actually made him decent last season.

We don't actually know that Iwobi is looking for £100k a week. it's all just rumours and right now we aren't looking at offering any new deals.

But I agree, we absolutely shouldn't pay over the odds and he shouldn't be who we rely on to create the majority of our chances.
