Aiden McGeady

One of Martinez weaknesses was going for once touted young players who had major flaws - thinking that he could get them to the player they where once hyped to be, but as he showed as a manager - he wasn't the type to fundamentally change a player with weaknesses, Deuloefeu, McGeady both firmly in that catagory

Indeed.

That Deuloefeu bloke.....his "major flaws" have been the undoing of him :(

Not good enough to make our star studded substitutes bench at the end.

So we binned him off and now he is starring for AC Milan and has just made his senior Spanish debut.

And he is still more than young enough to become the "player he was once hyped up to be".

About opinion mate, the standard in Italian football at present is absolutely shocking and arguably the worst it's ever been bar about 3 teams

He failed under two very different managers here, failed under the Sevilla manager and failed to impress Barca twoce enough to give him a chance.

Good luck to him, he is more than capable of producing in a slower paced league, he has the talent and seems a sound lad, but this league requires more than that, it requires you to not be blowing at your backside after 15 minutes

Way to just write off the most talented player to pull on the blue shirt since Wayne Rooney ;)

At what point does talent need to be accompanied by hard work though mate?

Ravel Morrison was labelled by Ferguson as having more talent than anyone in the class of 92' - didn't matter ultimately, similarly Vaughan was regarded as having more talent than Rooney at the same age of around 15 by Holden (he personally said that to me), the world is littered with players hyped and touted as the next big thing who have done nothing in their careers, he's had the chance under 3 managers so far and each one deemed him ultimately not good enough to start or even make the bench.

As i said would have loved him to have been great for us and lived up to the early Barca hype, but he didn't - he had one purple patch for us last season when he looked like he could turn into something special, followed by a year of nothing.

All credit to Deulofeu for starting to play consistently and it's genuinely good to see that he's finally making a name for himself after such promise.

However, as @bluestevon rightly mentioned, the quality of Seria A is far from what it once was and the overall style of play will suit his style.

So while it's good to see his confidence is improving and he's playing well, I'm still dubious whether he'd successfully make it over here.

If I am honest with you Phil, I watch a bit of Serie A and I very much doubt the quality is less than the EPL

Too many of our friends on here, @bluestevon included, are desperately clutching at any straw to justify the inexplicable loaning out of one of our brightest sparks a few weeks after our regular first choice wide man was injured and ruled out for the season.

Few more digs at Martinez in this post again for his transfers. Thing is, Martinez was working within the limits of the previous financial position, something which Moyes had whinged about for years as well, and was a massive contributing factor for signing Martinez in the 1st place, as he would not demand massive budgets.

McGeady, Cleverley, Deulofeu, Alcaraz, Kone, Joel, Besic, Niasse, Barry, Eto'o, Mori, Mccarthy... All who have come in for massive criticism at various points, we're signed for combined pice that we sold Fellaini, Naismith, Jelavic and Anichebe...

Admittedly, they didn't all work (most of them backfired in all honesty) but they were largely gambles worth taking when working on a imited budget.

McGeady and Deulofeu are the types of players who either thrive or fail depending on the teams they play in and the roles they are given.

They didn't work out and Martinez lost his job. The way people on here talk, you'd think he had spent Liverpool money on them and sold our prized assets for buttons.

And whoever compared Deulofeu to Rooney, they are not even remotely in the same league, not even close. I like Deulofeu, but he has largely disappointed and flattered to decide. Rooney was running games in this league when he was 16 in a much poorer side and is hands down the most exciting player I've seen play for Everton. Not even a close thing.

Not clutching at straws at all mate, you may really enjoy deulofeu, but the manager valued a entire team working hard - he doesn't or can't do that, he values pressing and even attacking players trying to contribute to defending - again deulofeu can't or chooses not to do that.

If he was putting in amazing performances and winning matches single handed them yeah maybe you can carry a player like that, but honest answer is he wasn't.

To call him the most talented player we've had since Rooney is baffling, and shows a really low standard.

He's now 23 years old and on his 6th team in the past four seasons. Been kicked to the curb by each manager with the exact same message about his flaws and how he needs to change as a player.

Sorry but if you think the Italian league is strength wise on par with the premiership then your in a small minority on that, Juve, Roma and Napoli aside it's a poor standard.

Ask yourself this, why has every manager he's had ended up bouncing him out the first team, then the squad, then the club?

The only positive I can recall about his time here was speaking in Russian in a press conference when we played that Russian side away a few years back.

Scored a cracking free kick at the King Power for us on the first day of the season back in 14/15
My memory's bloody awful, but I think I was there that day, and seemed to think he could do all sorts of ace things for us at the time.

How wrong I was.

When he came out at Goodison that first time to wave to the crowd I thought it was some bloke from the Gwladys St invited on to take a half time penalty in his slippers.

I didn't realise he was that good in Scotland and Russia the manager asked that he played for us blindfolded, had fifteen pints before he got on the pitch just to make it a level playing field. One of them who thought he was better than he was.

In fairness mate, I also saw that goal in the 2 2 at Leicester on the opening day, he was as surprised as me that he started that day but he curled in a beauty - can't deny that - but I also saw him miss a Diana Ross away at Barnsley in the League Cup and I was as relieved as he was that he got subbed that night.

No loss. Move on.

Aye, I was there that day with @Mikey_Fitzgerald I think (?) and Aiden was bloody awful in the first half.
On the plus side, apart from the comeback and win, my overriding memory of that game, was the huge noise we made as the second half started and how ( in a commentators cliche ), we sucked the ball into the net. Happy days, but happier without McGeady.

Good turn out Woolly that night, may have been McGeadys last start - may also have been Penningtons first - but when Geri came on - he was unplayable - and with Barkley it was one of them nights you just know why you do it.
