I hear the German and Swiss embassies both did an overnight runner and left all their local support staff to swing in the wind the next morning

Edit; subject to confirmation obvs

Are any western nations coming out looking good after this?

What I find strange is that when the US withdrawal was announced it was greeted somewhere between “about time” and “meh”. Now, with hindsight, everyone could see exactly what was going to happen and reacting accordingly with the usual pontificating.
Biden “irreparably damaged” by this. Like any other US President would have had the mandate to do anything different.
This is what populism gives you.

He is doing a fine job of getting Trump. Back in power.
on first seeing his speech the other day , I though yep I can see where your coming from , but let's break it down a bit.
he says the ANA refused to fight , they have lost 66,000 people the last decade most in the latter part.
prior to the rushed withdrawal they had being doing a relatively decent job of holding the Taliban, with leadership from a core force of NATO/USA troops offering leadership and training, the last USA death was 18 mths a go,
so it looks like somebody else was doing the hands on fighting on the ground not the USA
a recent report done for congress wanted the USA force to be expanded from 2500 to 4000, hardly fighting other people's wars as he states.
It has about 15000 troops in Italy and Spain for a bit of perspective.
The ANA was ordered to stop fighting , was demoralised from the moment the withdrawal was announced as it's leadership and Allies we seem to be leaving it
to it's own devices.
Its not an established army with years of training and tradition behind it,, so to take the leadership away abruptly , was only ever going to have one outcome , it becomes dysfunctional.
in doing so he has basically washed his hands of the deaths of the allied troops we have died and been maimed out there for what turns out to be
for absolutely nothing.
I have no problem with anybody leaving the country , as I have said previously it's a minefield ,but do it with a bit of thought for what you are leaving behind ,this on any scale has been handled very badly.
basically fk this I we are getting off, because it will play out well at home, that has backfired
Think one of Obama's administration said Bidon hasn't got a call on overseas policy right for 40yrs it looks like he has carried that run on.
He is tainted by this now, can't see how he will survive past his term in office.

Absolutely, and the overnight disappearance from the Bagram Air base was morale sapping In the extreme. Just caught up with the Johnny Mercer comments…very powerful…….

I see China has just had a pop about Taiwan and the US

And why not, Biden has just proven that the USA will not support them. I am pleased with the discussion in parliament today and to the shameful speech Biden made. It has also shown the U.K. that the USA must no longer be followed slavishly as they have shown the same disdain to the U.K. and its views and support as they did to Afghanistan….
