What I find strange is that when the US withdrawal was announced it was greeted somewhere between “about time” and “meh”. Now, with hindsight, everyone could see exactly what was going to happen and reacting accordingly with the usual pontificating.
Biden “irreparably damaged” by this. Like any other US President would have had the mandate to do anything different.
This is what populism gives you.

Biden is conflating the decision to leave with the manner of leaving. The reality is he likely had quite a bit of latitude to navigate the Doha Agreement. Removing air support (rendering the ANA feckless) and vacating Bagram are going to be viewed - at least if history reflects this incident accurately - as unbelievably bad decisions.

I think, ultimately, that UK/US citizens will be ok. But the margin between legendary foreign policy embarrassment and absolute foreign policy catastrophe is pretty small right now.

History is reflected in the eye of the beholder. That process has already begun.

Pete, he backed the Nationality and Borders Bill whose thinking has been fundamental to 30,000 Afghans being sent back to that country over the past 20 years. You know, before people falling off of aeroplanes made even the Tories feel a pang of guilt.

There is no pang of guilt. Those that qualify to arrive, and I include all those who worked for the U.K., should arrive….

In a single decision, Biden has destroyed the USA’s worldwide credibility, allowed Afghanistan to go back in time, undermined any possible defence of Taiwan, encouraged Russia, China, Iran etc, while throwing all of its closest allies, including the U.K. under the bus. The enormity of this stupid, selfish, ignorant decision will become visible over the next two years and I fear for the many hundreds of thousands who will die as a result…

There is a truck load of blame to go around and the last 4 US presidents all having blame to take.

Hard left Corbynite Richard Burgeon thinks we should pay reparations to the murderous Taliban. It just shows you how warped the hard left's thinking and ideals really are.

Did he say reparations to the Taliban? Or the people of Afganistan?

The glib reality is, the hard left have called this right from day 1. It's been a complete disaster, waste of time and we have sacrificed lives for nothing. I remember making these points in 2001.

Biden has made a poor decision, but he was boxed in by Trumps plan and agreement with the Taliban. In honesty they both share blame. Biden has played a bad hand badly too.

In the U.K. it was a Labour government that took us in….my own opinion is not to occupy but to send retribution, on a scale that ensures a 9/11 doesn’t happen again without understanding the level of forthcoming retribution…..
