That's a great quote there. I'm admittedly not great on English history going back to that time period. I definitely have to read up on Cromwell.
I'm not sure it's an actual quote from Cromwell himself although it's from a good film albeit not entirely factually correct. I'd recommend watching it if you can.

Also, I'd also definitely recommend reading up on the real Cromwell and the entire Civil War era as it's a really interesting and important period of time.

The consequences of the period are still evident today all around the world if you've read up on it - some good, some bad. Some in between.

My only point of warning: rightly or wrongly, Cromwell will always be a very divisive individual within a lot of communities.

20 years of war billions spent, then within a matter of weeks it's back to square 1. What's the next step? The Afgan defence forced numbering 300K+ armed and funded at great expense by the US and it's allies, have basically just ran away without a fight.. how much longer would the west have needed to stay involved?

Crazy to even think back to when this conflict started that there'd be a Taliban spokesperson on the BBC...

A lot of lies in there obviously - we're already seeing Afghan's who collaborated with western forces being executed and I imagine there'll be a fair bit of 'purging' for the foreseeable future.

Basically killed thousands of soldiers and civilians, armed the taliban to the teeth, endangered millions more but the defence companies have made a lovely profit
Always what it boils down to.
A few people have made a fortune from the war.
Wait till some new politicians make friends in the arms industry, party donations suddenly go up, campaigns get bigger, votes come in and before you know it, there will be a new conflict to profit from. Lives be damned.
Hell, even the entertainment industry has profitted from it. Hurtlocker, American Sniper, etc, would any of those get made without the war?

Trying to position themselves to the world ready for after they take over.
No shortage of reports of women being forced out of their schools/jobs and told they will never go back.

My spider senses tell me we are going back in

We're not that stupid.

There's no point. Spend 20 years training an army and they fold like a pack of cards immediately.

It's clear the people of Afghanistan by and large want to be a failed state and international pariah under the Taliban. Let them go about it. If there's a terrorist attack enabled by the Taliban, raize Kabul to the ground from the air.

I see China have already thrown their hat in the ring saying they see the Afghan Taliban are an important force in the region and will be pivotal in the countries 'reconstruction' and have already held talks with them. Russia also.
