Academy Failure?

Yeah, fair. Duffy is better than Keane,

Is he?

I don't like Keane and don't mind Duffy but there really is not much between them. It's like Dunk, he looks good in Brighton's set up, the times I have seen him against us he had looked poor because he has zero pace and kept getting caught out. Either of their centre backs would be crucified playing for us.

I guess the biggest difference is about 28mil out of pocket...for very similar quality

JJK, connolly, Davies, benni,Gordon, dowell, feeney and Simms are the lads who have showed potential in the last couple of seasons (may of missed 1 or 2) how many of them are in our first team squad this season or featured in it? Gordon 2/3 times and Davies that’s it... we don’t give youth a chance,

We absolutely do give youth a chance.

It just so happens that most of the youth we play did not come through our system and we got them at the next stage.

Holgate, DCL and Davies are all youth who were given a chance. We signed Richarlison and Kean at a pretty young age too. They are still young players who we need to nurture and be patient with.

Lots of clubs do this. Everyone is raving about Billy Gilmour for Chelsea but he wasn't a Chelsea youth product as such, he came through Rangers system.

Were we ever amazing over the last 15-20 years? Osman, Barkley, Rodwell, and Rooney are the four who made an impact on the first team. There was the odd Nick Chadwick, Baningime, Duffy or Pennington, but we've consistently not had a solid pipeline for a long time.

We need players who are technically sound and very athletic.

We need players who can take the ball in tight spaces. Players who are brave and demand the ball.

Playing hoofball with 10 men behind the ball is a waste of time at that level.

Hibbert, Anichebe, Davies? Kenny and Vaughan are way ahead of the others you named too.

Kenny is questionable in terms of getting into Everton's team regularly barring emergencies. I'll give you Hibbert, Vaughan and Anichebe.

Even so, going back to the 90s, how many have we had come through? Its not stellar.
I wasn’t including kenny, just saying he’s played a lot more than the likes of baningime who you mentioned. I’d say seven proper first teamers from the academy in 18 years is pretty decent. It’s not particularly remarkable, but it’s certainly not a bad record.

No, it probably is about the same as many other Prem teams. Its actually probably pretty normal not to produce tons of top talent. Southampton seemed to have a period of unearthing decent players, but that seems to have ground to a halt now.

At least against Duffy you'd know you'd been in a game. Keane won't lay a glove on you.And as stated earlier we'd be 20m plus better off.

Just heard this on BT Sport from Jake Humphrey and Joe Cole;

"2 players in 5 years from the academy have got in this team. That's dreadful from a club in this city. It stinks of short term planning"

Two things then, is this correct?

And given the success of the academy in winning their leagues etc, what's going wrong?

In the last five years, that can’t be right:

Davies
Connolly
Benni
Kenny
Pennington
Gordon

Of the top of my head,
