Academy Failure?

Do we give up on youngsters too soon and move them on? Duffy and Lundstram could both be adding to the side currently. Robinson by all accounts had played well in the championship. We’re still producing some quality but it’s such a jump from the youths to prem ready. Some get there later though.

The thing has Duffy and lundstram took a very long time to come back into the prem, I mean even if we stuck with them, they wouldn't have stayed here all that time getting no game time. They've done well, but they're still not good enough to play for us, nor ever were. I think we hold on to youngsters for too long if anything, we have a load of players getting to 21/22 who are still in our u23s and no chance of getting in our first team squad, but they still haven't had a good loan. You see kids from Chelsea doing really well in the lower leagues and even though everyone knows they won't be getting near their first team, higher championship and lower perm clubs still take a risk on them for a good few million because they know who they are.

We have players like Morgan feeney for example, who nobody would know about.

We have developed a winning team at under 23 level over the last few years, but surely at that level it is about developing players for the first team as opposed to developing a winning team. I think too many players haven’t been allowed to go out on loan and ones that have, the clubs they’ve gone to haven’t been the right moves. Anthony Gordon is a case in point, he should have gone out on loan this season.

Just heard this on BT Sport from Jake Humphrey and Joe Cole;

"2 players in 5 years from the academy have got in this team. That's dreadful from a club in this city. It stinks of short term

Two things then, is this correct?

And given the success of the academy in winning their leagues etc, what's going wrong?
Has to be wrong Unsy two titles in 3 seasons players sent out on loan in a mass exadous each season......maybe that's the problem?

Our fans don’t give youth a chance, it’s a fact, by 21 you need to be a world beater or your told you ain’t good enough. I’d love to see our bench full of young eager players waiting to take there chance. People wrote off DCL and they will write off Davies, JJK and benni too

I suppose the key question is would you want them back? It would be a no from me, so on that basis I can’t really say we made a mistake letting them go. I think Duffy was always destined to have a PL career, but he was never going to play under Martinez. Lundstram I don’t think many people would have expected to come back up, but then I don’t think many people would say any of that Sheffield United team were obvious PL players,

I think feeneys contract runs out this summer!

Duffy and Lundstram wanted guaranteed game time. Duffy broke in and Moyes wasn't keen - and there wasn't a chance he was displacing Jags and Distin.

We offered Lundstram a new contract which he refused and went to Oxford. He's done well to get where he has. Same happened with Baxter.

Adam Forshaw won academy player of the yeah...then didn't offer him a new contract.

The big one at the moment for me is Dowell. Literally on the cusp...now who knows.

Yeah, fair. Duffy is better than Keane, so for that reason alone I would. Could’ve maybe gone the Chelsea route and loaned him for another 2 seasons. It’s hard though.

Our first team has been a mess the past few years, we have wasters still at the club on big money, the youth players don't get much of a chance to play as the managers job is usually on the line or we are playing said wasters to justify their salaries.

I think our youth players who have made the grade are pretty much in line with other top flight sides generally.

Of course it would also help if we didn't hate all our players too.
