100% .. in my starting 11 mock up that’s exactly it!!
It gives Gomes freedom to express himself without being isolated and picked on for his defensive frailties

I don't see anybody keeping him out of the team.

We're signing James Rodriguez and have Richarlison so Doucoure starts in 3rd but that's well too high for me.

Agree. Allan and Doucoure are the kind of players who would be perfect to play the 'wide' roles in a diamond as they both have the legs to cover the pitch horizontally. Then we could possibly see Gomes playing at the base of the diamond dictating play.

Different system but Barcelona had Gomes in mind for Busquets long term replacement there, and played him in that role a number of times. Obviously doesnt tackle or do the defensive side anywhere near as Busquets but probably wouldnt need to with Doucoure and Allan in front of him

Yep - really that role doesn't require somebody who can tackle, it just requires a player with good positional sense who can cover the pitch horizontally to block passing lanes (Pirlo being a great example of this). Would be really interesting to see us try this, rather than the flat 4-4-2 which really doesn't suit anybody.
