Which is precisely why he shouldn't have taken control in 1999. The feller wasn't a white knight to the rescue when Johnson needed buying out either, because he was hell bent on getting control of the club for a decade prior to that and had one consortium knocked back. He didn't have the cash and we've all had to pay for that as he's gotten people on board who dont see anything but future profit potential, who wont invest, and who have already jeapordised the future of this club with that preposterous Kirkby move.
Kenwright may only be 24% of the shareownership but he is 100% the source of our off-field problems.
There weren't too many of us complaining back then, when we were desperate to see the back of agent Johnson though mate...
What he should have done is steadied the ship & then sold up the minute
Moyes somehow managed to get us into 4th place, thus giving us a shot at the CL.
Bill's never had the ability to fund the club, even on a short term loan basis, & the way the game has gone, that makes him a throwback to yesteryear in terms of how the club has been forced to operate.
On the up side we've avoided the boom / bust cycle of some of our peers, on the down side we've only made progress on the pitch due to good football management & excellent use of the limited transfer budgets.
Kenwright is one of 3 major shareholders, they are all equally culpable for our lack off field progress, he bares the brunt as he chose to take the Chairman's seat. So whilst he put himself there to be shot at, to say he's 100% responsible avoids the truth. If he died tomorrow, his shares would either by kept by his wife or sold on, another board member would take the hot seat & knack all would change, unless they collective decided to sell up.
Dressing Bill up as EFC's bogeyman avoid having to deal with the harsh realities of what would realistically change when he moves on, unless we drop for a benefactor.
