A fantastic thing that I'm really excited about regarding Martinez at Everton so far

Poor form how this thread has turned out, place needs a cull.

Blues against blues before a ball has even been kicked. We already have a divided fanbase sadly, we don't need it over the manager too.

In time it will become apparent if he's the right man for the job, lets see.

True, like..... I know another thread that will shoot to the top of the pops if he is,nt the right fella.

I've said it before: Martinez has a Herculean task at this club. Not only is he having to change the culture of our squad away from a pretty direct style of play - reminding grown men of the need to use the full range of their technical abilities - he also has to contend with many fans who (because of years of expecting that same style of play) will become edgy and critical of any deviation from the predictable - but safe and quick method - of moving the ball into the opposition's half. He's got a real fight on his hands here with that lot.

This. It takes time for any new manager to instill a new philosophy in a club and the fact that people are getting hysterical after a few friendlies is bewildering.

I really dont know what team you were watching last season. Certainly not the one that had the bulk of posession in the vast majority of games they played, or one in which comfortably out performed Wigan in every department statistically that you can think of.

MACCA75 - you have your statistics completely wrong-
Wigan had more possession and a better pass rate than Everton last season - check it again please -
to me the situation is fairly clear - with the odd exception the biggest Moyes fans are the biggest Martinez sceptics -
that explains a lot I think - I really hope Roberto makes them eat their words - for the sake of Everton, the players and the fans

The sad thing is, if the names of the club, players and manager were hidden here, I'd know it's Evertonians anyway.

Its actually very close having checked. I guess Wigan were kicking off an awful lot more than Everton, who incidentally were miles ahead of posession in the opposition half and chances created from open play.

I support Martinez but i'm entitled to be concerned as i'm not convinced at all by his previous record. Sorry if this makes me less of a fan!

which to me is slightly alarming considering they have been bit part players for the time they've been here. My point is that we need the 'names' to 'step-up to the plate' otherwise we're in S'it Street and to me the reasons this hasn't happened are plain to see.

I'm an optimist by nature (think you need to be if you're an Everton fan) but I simply cannot help feeling concerned about what's ahead under Martinez.

I think it goes the other way. Under Moyes the only way that fringe players were going to get a game was if one of the regular starting eleven was unavailable. That's now changed and the players on the margins have much more of an incentive to try and impress the manager. And if the squad men are raising their game it means that those in possession of the shirt need to raise their standards too to keep their place.

Moyes always said that the players wanted more competition in the squad to push them harder, but he'd have internationals like Naismith, Oviedo, Hitzlesperger and Mucha and rarely use them.

I feel optimistic too, about our new manager, but I'll admit I'm a little scared that it will all go to ****. As supporters of this fine club we've all been let down many times before. I'm going to remain cautious and reserve judgment.

I'll applaud all those who are keeping the hype levels within the margins... It's not bad to have a feel-good atmosphere, but let's keep our feet on the ground and be patient with the man. I'll see us play a few times in the league before I judge.

Worth keeping in mind the infinite optimism that Liverpool fans had when Dalglish took over, and how quickly they turned on him when they felt let down. Not comparing us to them, but it's a reasonable example of how we should be careful not to get carried away. Just my two cents...

Well said

Really excited about the football. Proactive tactics, forward-thinking coaching, a manager that aims to dominate every opponent we play.

Wasn't overly impressed with the constant conceding of goals at Set Pieces last season under moyes. Something, with him being a defence man thought would of been addressed as soon as it became a obvious problem for all to see but never was. Hopefully Martinez can work on that

Sheesh!...there are some whinging curmudgeons populating these forums. Can't we, before a competition ball has been kicked, have an EFC house united...in hope and belief and goodwill to our new manager and his 'style'?
