A concern about Martinez's approach

I think he'll be assessing the squad now before deciding where to strengthen, at the back of his mind it will be a thought that baines n fellaini may go so i reckon he'll have replacements in mind.

In mind is different to actually approaching clubs that have started their season, and have systems with these players.

Price goes up and / or they put the NOT FOR SALE sign up.

Yes true enough but i'd be surprised if he doesn't have a contingency plan and already put some feelers out. I have a feeling a midfielder maybe coming regardless of fellaini going or not.

The worry for me, is if this whole Fellaini saga goes on till the start of the season, and we are rushing around to bring in players.
It was always going to play out like that mate. That's the way this club is run. I've thought all along that this window (despite all the talk of 'loads of extra tv revenue to spend') will see a negative net spend. We'll sell Fellaini last few days of the window for circa £23/25M and spend half of it on his replacement. The rest will cover the signings so far and the excess will be banked. I'll be amazed if that doesn't happen...and even the prospect of selling Baines and lumping the proceeds of that also in the board's latest scam auditing classification.

I hope you are right mate. If Wigan or any other club play hard ball.....like we are doing with United, then we could well start the season with no Fellaini or replacements!!

Well that's worst case scenario, i'm optimistic the new boss wouldn't let that happen.

Its seems that prices have gone up this summer especially players with premiership experience. No way we can over-pay for players so Martinez needs to look abroad for cheaper options rather then focused on James McCarthy who will be over-priced. The problem with this is that it can sometimes take longer for them to settle in the country, get used to the league or cannot adapt to the league (billy).

True.

But he has to weigh up, is the over-priced player worth that risk, with the advantages you said. We may have little choice, and other clubs will know this.

Also, we cant be hypicritical with this. We want top dollar for Fellaini, but won't pay it for other clubs "Stars".

We want top dollar but will we get top dollar due to his clause, he easily worth 30 mil, the best outcome would be that Man u don't want him and opt for someone else.

It's not the case that he insists on every single move be built with short passing from the back. That just does not tally with what we've seen so far in reality. Nevertheless, the impulse to get the ball down and play it is the correct one. I don't blame people who've only known Smith/Moyes as manager thinking playing football like that with regularity is exotic and dangerous, but it really is the only way to progress. In short, we need to drag ourselves from the primeval slime we sunk into during the last 15+ years. We are the School of Science. We do have a tradition to uphold. Martinez is at least trying to get us back to that status as a progressive football club. We should applaud his efforts every step of the way.

It's certainly what I've seen, there's an obvious reluctance from the players to play anything but a short ball at the back.

I have to laugh at your notion that before the arrival of Martinez we were somehow 'industrial' in our play & he's going to somehow get us back to the glory days by having us play in the style that his last side did.......

Our glory years during my lifetime (my first game was '78) was Kendall Mk I's side, & Joe's Cup winning side of '95. Don't try & tell me that both of those sides were successful through some form of tiki taka, short passing style of play mate.

Listen, Martinez seems a decent bloke & he certainly talks a good game, but I have genuine concerns about how his seeming obsession with 'his style' might overtake the need to achieve results. We can't afford a season of midtable obscurity, if our best players think we're not at least in the mix at the start of the season for a Euro spot, then they're going to look to move on. In short he needs to adapt our 'style' over time, as I'm certain that all of our current personnel don't have the exact attributes that he would choose if he was starting from scratch.

Therefore, he needs to implement changes that his current players are capable of delivering & change his personnel over time. As he brings in more of what he wants, he can make more changes, steadily getting to the 'style' that he wants us to play, with players that have the right skill set to deliver it.

My concern is that he didn't do that at Wigan. There he insisted that they played in a certain style from the off & it was patently obvious that some of the players simply weren't good enough to deliver what he wanted. A good manager gets the maximum out of what he has at his disposal. Based solely on pre-season it would appear that Martinez is going to do the same at Goodison i.e. totally change the style from day 1, which whilst we have better players than he had at Wigan, is still a massive risk in my eyes & I make no apologies for sharing it.

I hope the guy goes on to prove that my concerns are totally unnecessary & we 'mix & match' our game to suit who were playing & who we have available. I think you've mis-interpreted a valid concern for a 'moan', we've got nothing to moan about yet, as we've not kicked a competitive ball.

I reckon we'll have an alright first season with some real highlights where we tonk teams littered with meh defeats.

He'll receive goodwill from most but second season is whee he'll be judged as he will have had time to implement his style accordingly. You can't fool the Goodison crowd though so if its not leading to anywhere then he'll soon know.

Everton's the team that plays beautiful football but they won't be blinded by tiki taka guff if its not getting result like them beauts across the park.

We just need to give him a chance. This is a fresh start for the club, a new era if you like. I am positive about him. COYBB!!

This, 100%. Especially as I'm in the camp that appreciates Fellaini but at £23-25m we should cash in to bring in at least two quality players more suited to the new manager's plans.

I think he will have a solid list of replacements drawn up but the later it gets, the less keen other clubs will be to sell.
