195 countries in the world, 48 are competing in the world cup... far more countries don't qualify than do qualify.

Also the term world cup is now a lot more factually accurate, with more nations from different parts of the world being able to compete in the actual finals.

European fans are too snobby imo, we seem to be the only ones who ever moan about lower quality nations being able to compete, as if the world cup exists for our entertainment only. The same thing happened with the club world cup, the only people who really moaned about it were Europeans... Brits in particular!

Yeh sure FIFA are greedy but for me a 48 team world cup is without question a good thing.
Well said. It’s all a money grab for fifa though. If it was really about the game and a global celebration then ticket prices wouldn’t be what they are. Most fans are priced out of it.

I have a cousin living in NY who assumed I would becoming for WC in US, I laughed - no way
This WC is for nations who either have never qualified or who don't usually qualify to show their gratitude and how much they love football when they remain happy to be there after they get smashed.

It's for these and also for the South American fans to perform monotonous religious style chanting while doing that flicky wrist thing.

Czech Republic and Denmark, bring it.
A great draw for us. Sure, very difficult in Prague or Olomouc or wherever they take us, but more difficult than Budapest? Not a chance. We had to win there - a draw in the Czech Republic and a win on pens will do us fine. Tough? Sure. Underdogs? Definitely. Hope? Loads of it.

The real beauty is if we win we are in Dublin against beatable opposition. That's a massive carrot, or Parrott even.

That draw was about as good as it could have been for Ireland. The home draw is the key. Wales are more likely to be in their final than we are ours, but if we make ours we're more likely to qualify.

That said, I can see Northern Ireland making life very difficult indeed for the terrified Italians...
