A big issue is that it feels like even right wing voters are starting to tire of the culture war nonsense we’ve seen in recent years and there are Republicans (And Conservatives over here) who have based a large amount of their campaigns pledging to ends “wokeness”

Trump on the other hand has (relatively speaking) not gone down that road as hard (as he’s been too busy making himself look like a martyr) so it looks like he is hoovering up all those voters not wanting to vote on a culture war candidate or are too stubborn to vote Dem.

Recently I pondered the decline of American wrestling as a genuinely funny entertainment. In the 1980s, it was often comedy gold. Those old Saturday Night Main Events were hilarious. Then it hit me: what was preposterous nonsense then is serious reality today. Basically, it's no longer possible to send up behaviour that is now so all-enveloping as to be the new normal. The Million Dollar Man was a character so brilliantly written that everybody loved to hate him. Now, his equivalent would win the US election.

I think people need a world war. Sadly, we won't be surviving this one.

But Trump is Patient Zero of all this anti-woke nonsense. The rest of the candidates campaigning on that agenda are simply doing so because, unlike Trump, they aren’t willing to take to the stage night after night and spew racist, misogynistic and homophobic rhetoric. So instead, they just build their platform around the hope of one day creating a “utopia” where they, or their descendants, WILL be able to say all those things without being vilified the way that Trump is.

I agree with what you are saying and I’m not suggesting Trump has moved on from being a bigoted tit or that he isn’t massively responsible for it, just that he’s been sidetracked from the culture war stuff by focussing on the “look, they’re trying to silence us all”/professional victim stance he’s opted with all the legal cases.

I doubt it’s intentional but it may well have helped him here with voters who are sick of candidates who seemingly make the ‘culture war’ their entire platform (De Santis for example)

I also have no doubt he will jump right back in at the deep end if it can help him at some point, mind you!
