Current Affairs 2024 POTUS race

this seems to be primarily on the republican side.
the democrats do the polar opposite and tend to nominate moderates in the hope of mopping up some republican vote.
For once I wish they'd forget about the middle ground and just run a true progressive.
Given about a third of the country identifies as moderate, I’m not sure going all the way to either extreme is a good idea. Biden won not being Trump and that included a good chunk of the independent vote as well.

It just seems like rather than win over voters to their point of view, they try to moderate to get votes.
Trump (and rare I'll say this) stuck to his guns. He didn't give an inch and people loved it.
Look at Romney, a moderate in Massachusetts, rather than try and convince voters that he could do a good job, he tried to be more conservative and people saw right through it.
Look at Warren, no one wanted to hear her mid west poor parent story anymore, people just wanted to see her tear bankers (and bloomberg) to pieces, but she got on the national stage and tried to appeal to mid west soccer moms.
Sanders would have stuck to his guns but everyone was scared he wouldn't have moderated. He stuck to his guns so much he kinda disqualified himself by not joining the party who's primary he was running in.
There is a moment, right now, where that final third of Americans are getting weary of unbridled capitalism, crippling health insurance that doesn't cover anything, and education costs that are prohibitive.
A progressive politician with charisma stands a chance.

Likely depends on who the GOP nominee is. If it’s Trump, the safer bet is still to run someone like Biden imo. If it’s anyone else, maybe they lean a little bit more to the left, but who would it be?

I’m not sure how his Harvard AND Yale education fits in to that narrative
He is going fully into the “Aw shucks, I’m not a book learnin’ kinda guy, just a regular Joe” character.

As for the rude nicknames, he mocked:

“I don’t know how to spell the sanctimonious one. I don’t really know what it means, but I kinda like it, it’s long, it’s got a lot of vowels. We’ll go with that, that’s fine. I mean you can call me whatever you want, just as long as you also call me a winner because that’s what we’ve been able to do in Florida, is put a lot of points on the board and really take this State to the next level.”

I don't think Haley has a chance.
Every GOP politician running or thinking of running wants to see trump convicted otherwise he takes the GOP nomination.
If he isn't convicted and takes the nomination, Biden will beat him handily.
If he does get convicted and ruled out of the race, I'd say it's a clear run for DeSantis.
That could spell trouble for the Dems and DeSanitis is smart and will be well able to play to the Trump loons and the moderates at the same time.
At that point the Dems should consider Buttigeig or Raskin.
I think Trump will be arrested but not convicted so free to run and Biden will beat him again.
Expect to see a lot of Lake who'll likely be Trumps running mate.
So yea, four more years of Biden unless Trump gets convicted. If he does, it'll be madness out there!

Would be my guess….

TBF this is one I disagree with a lot.

Trump won in 2016 because he called out the problems that exist in modern capitalism - the outright corruption of the tax code, the cost of healthcare, the role played by elites coining it in at everyone elses expense etc. This is still a big part of his appeal to people who are suffering and, whilst I appreciate he is one of those elites and is arguably more guilty of cheating taxes than anyone else, without any plausible appeal to those people (by even just admitting it is a big problem) I really don't see how they stop backing him.

This is why I think AOC is the only plausible option when she is able to stand; her stance on Amazon for example (which has been thoroughly vindicated by events), the tax code or the bent way in which the donor class are looting everyone is exactly what is required to beat Trump or a Trump-esque opponent.

my point was more that trump didn't soften to appeal to moderates.

Yea, the smart guy playing dumb and winning votes is almost scarier than the dumb guy playing dumb and winning votes.

yea, no idea what true progressive is out there at the moment that could capture the national mood.
So after that, I don't mind Buttigieg purely based on his ability to absolutely destroy right wing tv hosts live on air. He can do it like no other Dem I've seen and I'd love to see him go head to head with the likes of Trump or DeSantis.
I don't much care for his centrist policies tho.
I've been impressed with Raskin during the various house hearings. Particularly after what he went through losing his son and then serving the nation straight away. Also he looks like an oil painting of a president from the 19th century.

For Raskin to be considered or even want to consider a run, have to think his own health concerns would need be all cleared up. That man has had a tough go the last few years.
