and should never be used to name a US military facility.
Not only is it bizarre to allow it to be named that in the first place, the 50 odd year lag in naming that just shows the appalling legacy of Jim Crow.
DiSantis should be ashamed of throwing blatantly racist red meat to his base.
Hundo disagree. Again, eternal monument to shame.

It's the right name. In no universe should we be allowed to escape it.

I don't get it.
It'd be like the Germans naming a military facility fort Goebbels.
Naming a base after a confederate leader just normalizes an army that fought (and lost) for the right to own people.
While naming bases after confederate generals could be seen as irony, or to point out the folly of hubris, the normalizing of the name is far more sinister and dangerous.

The language is what it is. When it works us, we should take it. The language worked us on this one, and it was right.

Screw 'normalization'. Anyone with a brain knows what they're dealing with. IMO, quit trying to deal with the bottom half. I would rather deal with you. We can get somewhere.

Isn't that what museums are for? Changing the name isn't trying to hide the history.

Can't imagine it's particularly nice for African American soildiers turning up to a base that is named after someone that wanted to keep their ancestors enslaved.

Not taking this shot without a fight.

If you can't take irony, grow up. This one is vicious. Bragg? Really? This is one where the language wrecked us all.

Sorry if I've misunderstood you. Wasn't a shot at you. But Bragg was a Confederate general. Don't think I've said anything controversial and to be clear I am in no way trying to conflate your opinion with you supporting the Confederates. I think I understand your point but sorry if I have got it wrong. It's quite late here and I've had a few drinks.

I know he was. This is not the point. The point is that, as circumstance would have it, his name is a synonym for hubris.

That name belongs on our Special Forces. Forever. I fail to see how you don't get this one, no matter how many drinks you have had. To be direct about it, you're arguing for hanging a name like Dirac on them. No. Scalzi is incredibly wrong. The name is Bragg. It belongs.

Ok fine I get it. Brag = Bragg. Good one.

And I'm not arguing for any particular name to be put on it. Just that it would be probably be better if it wasn't named after a Confederate general, as ironinc as it may be. I offered an opinion, you don't agree.

This is not my point. I just think that it tends to validate mine, in context.

I will not be nice about my opinion. You might be right. Forces exist that will pull the other way, I still am comfortable dying on this hill alone. Or so you think.

I don’t see DeSantis as dangerous as Trump.

I think Ron would implement many awful policies if elected but I don’t believe he has the capability or emotional command of his followers to do the sort of stuff below as Trump that encourages domestic terrorism.

I was in two minds about this because for everything that is bad about Trump, he's not really interested in anything other than being the most important person in the room, DeSantis on the other’s hand is a bonafide conservative ideologue.
But despite what is being claimed by Trump loyalists and the conflation with regard to other politicians handling of classified information, what he had been up to further reinforces the demonstrable fact that if he can't win the game he's intent on burning down the stadium, to use a Tim Urban analogy.

The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has pushed back against calls to condemn a series of neo-Nazi protests that took place over the weekend, saying people are attempting to “smear” him.

On Saturday and Sunday, a group of 15 to 20 protesters donned Nazi symbols and chanted antisemitic slurs along the North Alafaya Trail in Orlando. According to videos that quickly circulated across social media, the protesters gave Nazi salutes, yelled “White power!”, waved an anti-Biden banner and at one point got into a brawl with a driver.

The protests have been met with disgust from Democrats and Republicansalike. However, DeSantis did not publicly condemn the marchers until Monday during a press conference, and then largely to deflect blame on to his political opponents. “So what I’m going to say is these people, these Democrats who are trying to use this as some type of political issue to try to smear me as if I had something to do with that, we’re not playing their game,” he said.

I am baffled as to why politicians don't take a layup like that and just dunk it with a "yes, I condemn them wholeheartedly, no place for that in America.." etc.
