Is it a formality that the Democrat convention endorses Harris?

When running for the nomination in 2020 she didn't even make it to the first primary. That's how good she was. Dem insiders have been whispering that she is much improved recently. This could be true or it could just have been a PR campaign to help oust Biden. She has been damn atrocious in some of her appearances as VP. On Kamala's bad days she makes Hillary Clinton seem normal.
She almost certainly loses the Western swing states of Arizona and Nevada. Does a black Californian female win in the upper mid-West swing states? We'll see, but she not an improvement on Biden when Biden was seen as competent. Harris is not winning working class mid Westerners the way Biden did.
Well, dice has now been rolled. I doubt Ttump will do another debate.
Of course a gaggle of idiots are going to love to run against a black woman...nothin' like appealing to your audience by default with minimal to little effort on your part.

Maybe, but I don't think abortion is as big of an issue in the white working class areas of the mid-West as it isn't, say, Cal or NY. I think Harris also wins less black males than Joe Biden, and Biden was already struggling with younger black males.

I don't think she is that liked in parts of the black community too due to her previous record for jailing a lot of younger black people for minor drug offences

I think the three things they have to do are (besides picking the right VP):
i) focus on Vance, and who funded him
ii) reach out to the Trump base in ways they can understand - start conspiracy theories, make them join the dots
iii) for Trump, just refer to him as a doddering old man - not a racist, a threat to democracy, a sex pest or anything like that, just someone close to death and easily manipulated
... basically just give people a simple message, something like the tech bros funded this and want to take your country away. Musk and Thiel are fundamentally weird as it is, make it look like they are trying to take over (they might be!) and all the unholy things they want - an end of privacy, man-machine interfaces etc etc. Bang the drum over and over again, in red states and potentially red states.
