Trump, much as he loves media exposure, also has form for avoiding some debatesSadly, it's the smart play. Starve DeSantis of media oxygen, forcing him to do controversial things to get it. Hit him on the controversy.
It's not what's best for the country, but politics hasn't been about that for some time now.
True enough. I thought it was less Obama doing poorly in the first debate so much as it was Romney just being prepared to the nines. That was, after all, the topic in his wheelhouse. Romney then gave it all back in the second debate, which was on a topic where he is much weaker.Trump, much as he loves media exposure, also has form for avoiding some debates
On January 26, 2016, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, and Donald Trump were invited to the primetime debate. Trump, however, declined to participate due to prior confrontations with the network and moderator Megyn Kelly,2016 Republican Party presidential debates and forums - Wikipedia

On October 8, the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that, due to Trump's positive COVID diagnosis, the second debate would be held virtually, with the moderator in Miami and the candidates participating remotely. Biden agreed to participate in the debate, but Trump said he would not take part in a virtual debate and would instead hold a rally.[125]2020 United States presidential debates - Wikipedia

Given how out of practice a president gets in the art of debating (for example how poorly Obama did vs Romney in their first debate in 2012) avoiding them until you have no other option seems to have significant personal upside/limited downside.
In any case looks like De Santis needs to work on his “how to stand in background whilst others are talking about me” face so he might appreciate skipping a couple of debates that sign the death knell to some of the periphery candidates. But overall, yes, if you think you're winning a debate is almost entirely prospective liability with little opportunity for gain.
Tbf it can’t go worse than the De Santis launch

I’m kinda surprised that for someone who has obviously wanted to run for high offce for a while hasn’t done some basics like watch videos of himself with the sound off to look at mannerisms (1.15 onwards for example)
Always amazes me that someone with as good an education as anyone could hope for, can make such amazingly bad strategic decisions. He should have read the signs and waited 4 years, instead his ego got the better of him. Now when he runs again he’ll be a joke candidate.Unless I miss my guess, he has learned the wrong lessons from Trump and thinks authenticity is the key. IMO, Trump is able to defy the usual conventions of politics because he had a celebrity cult of personality already built around his identity. FDR built one, Eisenhower already had one, Kennedy built one and Reagan had already laid a lot of the groundwork by the time he took office. They got away with defying political headwinds in a very different way.
Most politicians realize that if you're a Clinton or Bush 41, the way most of them are, you can't get away with this. You have to color within the lines. DeSantis seems to think he can be the next Trump. Data says it's backfiring.
Never met my ex, have you? It's a lot more common among high IQ people than you think. They tend to be really bad about the 'lifetime learning' thing, long on ego and short on practical problem-solving skills as a consequence.Always amazes me that someone with as good an education as anyone could hope for, can make such amazingly bad strategic decisions. I mean, it’s probably a good thing for everyone else tbh.
To be fair Reagan was literally an actor prior to getting into politics. That's the reason why he appeared to be "the most presidential" of virtually anyone in the last 50 years. Being the figurehead is about acting, and he excelled at itUnless I miss my guess, he has learned the wrong lessons from Trump and thinks authenticity is the key.
