Think there are some valid critiques in this thread

I'd say it's a far more pertinent question today than it was in 2016, and further, that looking to precedent to surmise probabilities in this matter says less about what might be than about how hard it is for media professionals to break with longtime narratives. If precedent is so crucial, it's only crucial with respect to Democrats; Republicans have been engaging in unprecedented behavior for several years now.

I’d agree. But along with his valid criticism of Trump feel that Biden needs to sharpen his positive message to increase turnout among those who are not as influenced as we are by Trump’s negatives.

Also because people tend not to be inspired by negatives. And democratic voters are notorious for needing to be inspired to actually go vote (largely because it is actually harder for the Democratic base to vote, and it's a higher bar to pass, but we'll leave that for another time).

I worry about Biden being able to bring out the youth vote.

I'm wondering if such folk who can be swayed one way or the other really exist at this point. The media's been so thoroughly saturated with Trumpiana over the past several years that it's hard to imagine someone who isn't already either sick to death of Trump's detractors or sick to death of Trump. If "Clinton fatigue" was real during Bill's administration, I can't imagine it won't apply to Trump's. The administration's driven me to become increasingly bloody-minded, but also increasingly exhausted.

Of course as you say, the trick will be increasing turnout. Ugh.

Same :(

You're right about the idea that Dems tend to want to swoon over a candidate (e.g., "Democrats fall in love and Republicans fall in line") but research seems to be indicating that Americans are often inspired to vote against rather than for. I know that in my own case I'll be voting for Biden without enthusiasm but I'll be voting against Trump with white-hot passion.

Whatever you thought to its accuracy the “Morning in America” campaign slogan appeared a popular message to a broad segment of the population. If an aging Reagan could master it perhaps Biden can too.

I did this in 2016 too.

I think Biden would do well to juxtapose hope and change (hello!) against Trump apocalyptica. But I'm not at risk of not voting Democrat, because we have a broken system, so it doesn't matter much what I think. I still struggle to understand why Warren isn't an obvious yes from 90% of America, so I am clearly an out of touch west coast liberal elite (the fact that I am actually one of those is irrelevant).

It's maddening. I'm pleased to be counted as an East Coast (from the West Coast) elite, especially in that I'd always labored under the assumption that penniless goofs didn't qualify. But I do, apparently. Wild times.

Care to clarify who the **** you are calling a Tory you absolute waste of space.

And I’m sure you we’re looking for a bite like this, quite frankly I couldn’t give a damn. You have zero idea what you’re “chatting utter wham” about 99% of the time.

Talk about a narcissism complex.Ever thought it’s possible that people (unlike you) actually take serious things seriously, and think that maybe such issues need a little more nuance, detail and deliberation than a 58 second youtube clip from 2 decades ago being used to score point by an absolute weapon on a forum.

Cretin.
