Think the Beto coverage has veered massively between overly positive (without much cause) and wildly negative (without much cause).I'm supporting Warren in the primaries, provided she doesn't drop out before their conclusion. Her policy proposals have teeth and draw upon the work she's been doing for years to rein in income inequality and humanize market systems, and I think she's generally much better on process than her fellow candidates, which allows her, more than most, the chance not only to call for change but to also describe the machinery by which it could work. I trust her more than anyone in the field to get substantive matters right.
But the past few days' Celebration of Beto!™ suggests a real hunger for a charming and anodyne young white guy who smiles a lot, used to be in a band, and won't trouble you with any policy specifics. Roll out the "Kennedyesque" appraisals and bless young Beto with comparisons to the most overrated Dem POTUS in the nation's history. Meanwhile I'll be in Massachusetts, vomiting into a bucket.
It’s interesting that the national and online coverage has trended negative, while the coverage coming out of Iowa (where he’s spent the last few days) has been mostly positive. Though that’s not an overly unusual discrepancy based on previous cycles.
I like Beto as a person, and think he does have potential to be an interesting candidate - I just don’t think the right time is now, as he needs more time to really hone his views and get more legislative/executive experience.
The problem is I don’t see how he realistically gets that, given where he’s from.
