Let's review.

He was glad HRC didn't get Sanders to be her running mate. That stands to reason, as it might've reduced the number of Sanders' supporters who declined to vote for Clinton in the general election.

He says some of Sanders' supporters voted for him in the general (which he attributes here to their critical views on free trade). We've known this since shortly after the 2016 election.

He's been talking a lot about Sanders lately, which the Intercept (and you, presumably) take to mean he's afraid to run against him. But how did you arrive at that conclusion? Isn't it at least as likely that all his recent talk about how the Democratic Party is trying to derail Sanders is intended to inflame the good senator's base and push them toward irreconcilable differences with any other Dem who might win the nomination (and vice versa), and drive down any eventual nominee's vote tally thereby?

You could see it that way and admittedly it does look like he is trying to get Bernie over the line by picking up for him publicly. But he sees the writing on the wall. He is sure he will most likely run against sanders so he’s playing the card the Democrats have dealt him by going after his party. He will keep up with that line against sanders. ‘Your party isn’t fit to run things etc’ And will no doubt in every debate besides calling him a communist will attack attack attack the faults of the party. Which he’s already setting it up that way. He’d much rather run against someone less competent and that doesn’t have such a strong following.

Sanders' numbers are really good right now. No doubt Trump's people are planning a campaign against him as a contingency. But nothing I've seen in the clips you've provided (for which I thank you) makes me think Trump sees Sanders as a more daunting opponent than the other Dem contenders. He'd probably most prefer to run against Elizabeth Warren so he could do his Pocahontas shtick, though. But alas.

Ultimately they're looking to depress Democratic voting overall. Trump's use of the Bernie-got-screwed-by-the-party trope (and it has indeed become a trope) is one element of that. Closer to home, watch for voter suppression efforts by your friendly local GOP.

He knows sanders will win he just wants to slam the party while he can get a dig in. Rightly so unfortunately.

Trumps been caught talking in private about not wanting to be up against Bernie a few times.
Has he? any links?
edit. Saw your links. Trump was right to fear a clinton sanders ticket in 16. He’d have no chance and he explains why. But it has no relevance to s 2020 run.

Yeah Trump preferring Sanders as the Dem candidate is a long standing myth. Of course he will serve it like that because Bernie is the front runner, he wants Democrats to think Sanders is bad for the party's 2020 chances so that they will go for someone less impressive.

Study reverse psychology.
