So that's literally every Tory voter on GOT who's now moaned about politicising the tragedy. If I didn't know any different, I'd think they were worried that the greedy, selfish lizards they vote for have no regard for the common man.
I take it you have been campaigning for a while about the safety of such buildings?

This is exactly what American conservatives do after one of our many stupid preventable shootings. They play the "too soon" card and then wait for everyone to move on so they can continue doing nothing.

The general point is that if you keep cutting funding to Councils, safety will be compromised. Where I work, we used to work closely with the Licensing Department. We used to get regular visits from Licensing, The Fire Brigade and the council Safety Officer. Now we never see them. We are wholly responsible for the safety of our premises. This is ok when you work for a responsible company like I do, but others will cut corners and compromise safety, and they won't be picked up on it until there's an accident. Hopefully some good will come from this senseless loss of life, and Government will stop cutting Council funding.

That's kind of it though isn't it? Assuming that the state has to live within its means then it can't keep spending way more than it raises. To a large extent, politics has determined which areas have seen funding squeezed, as some departments are sacred cows, hence why the NHS has largely been untouched, or why the heavily voting pensioners haven't been touched via the state retirement age, a means testing of the various bungs they get or a questioning of the triple lock. When such a big department doesn't 'contribute', then it means cuts elsewhere have to be even bigger and it moves less away from budgeting on merits and more on political expedience.
