Like I said earlier in the thread, he blew for a foul every time there was a corner. I think he'd lost his nerve and was so scared of missing something he just thought it was safer to blow for a free kick at every corner. I agree with you that there was no pushing, obstruction, or anything else, but that's not unusual, you see it all the time at corners and free kicks.

WTF?

The Ferguson disallowed goal still baffles me but that wasn't the reason we lost, conceding the second away goal at Goodison then not keeping it tight in the early stages of the second leg then conceding is what done it, we left ourselves too much to do. Wouldn't be the first time either, 2008/09 we let in two away goals against Standard that eventually cost us in Liege, 2009/10 2-0 up against Sporting Lisbon, we concede an away goal last minute then didn't perform in Lisbon, 2014/15 conceded away goal to Kiev, didn't hold tight when we got the away goal in second leg

Not quite sure what you're questioning, obviously I haven't watched the game back (why would you), but from memory he gave at least 3 or 4 free kicks for "infringements" at corners.
You seem to excusing him because he was consistent. He was, at the time, supposed to be one of the world's best referees. Why would he lose his nerve?

He gave a ridiculous reason at a press conference few years later.

I think he was warned to watch out for Ferguson as well.

Qualification to the champions league (£30m at the time) would have massively help us at the time.

Let it go lads, it’s just bad history. You don’t see the RS making excuses for losing the CL Final do you........oh no, wait......

I’m not one for conspiracies at all, but for me that was rigged. It wasn’t just the goal, it was the standard of refereeing throughout the entire game, it was as if Everton didn’t exist.

And bringing a famous referee out of retirement for one game which happens to be Everton and Villarreal (hardly giants)? Stinks to me that.
Nothing to add to this

I was at the game and didn't have the benefit of any TV replays. At the time I saw no infringement and I still can't, if anything Bent is being pushed by the Villarreal player. Ignoring the disallowed goal I had reservations about Collina's appointment to referee and it was very convenient to get Everton binned as soon as possible. However, on the night I've got a recollection of Tony Hibbert getting booked, then well before the disallowed goal Hibbo fouled again and I expected a second yellow (& hence a red card), but Collina just gave the foul - a golden opportunity to weaken Everton? That's if I remember it correctly, I'd had a few bevvies! As for Villarreal being better over the 2 games - they were, but many a team has progressed against the odds with a bit of luck! It's just the reality that on balance Everton have a history of suffering from major refereeing decisions.

I would argue that leaving Hibbert on actually weakend is more
