Well we created more chances at the Etihad than any other team this season. Same at Anfield. We could have easily won at the Emirates, and we could easily have drawn at Old Trafford.

So no, while we're not setting the world alight, if anybody expected us to be doing so four months into Silva's tenure then more fool them.

It's a long process. I'm not saying he's infallible, or hasn't made mistakes, but it seems we have some fans so ready to turn and it's just boring (not implying you are doing this).

mate we've picked up 1 point in them 5 games, I don't care how many chances we created it's still the same old everton ( incapable of producing on the big stage )

we have improved in terms of not going and getting our bellys tickled which is something but we are weird at the moment, we are missing big chances most games but then making big mistakes most games, not a good combo though, minds me of a certain ex manager...

An interesting stat here, people.

After 16 games of 2014/15 (Pochettino's first season), Spurs were in seventh on 24 points. That is exactly the same position that we were in before this weekend.

They beat Burnley in their 17th game to move onto 27 points from 17, but still stayed seventh.

In terms of 'big' games played up to that point, they had lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool, drawn 1-1 at Arsenal, lost 4-1 at City, lost 3-0 at Chelsea, and drawn 0-0 at home to United.

They finished the season on 64 points in fifth place.

Now I am not saying we will become what Spurs have come, but that's the model to follow.

They stuck with Pochettino, we need to do the same.

Look at my post about Spurs that I've just posted.

It very much is up for grabs. We're right in the mix. West Ham have had a good run but will drop off. Same with Wolves. Same with Watford.

Because those teams just like us have their deficiencies and that means they won't maintain form. We just have to try and maintain form for longer.

If that means that come the end of the season, 6th is still up for grabs, sound.

Yep, I know we've struggled against the likes of West Ham and Watford at home but I actually like us playing that type of team as they don't just sit back and shut up shop so we do/will get chances. Same applies when we will play these teams away.

Spurs Sunday will be a good test because they'll be confident of opening us up with the quality they have. Hopefully we can do the same.

Its been a real crap December so far but we could win the next 3 and we'd all be full of beans

Up the Everton

Why do you act like it's so easy to replace your record Premier League goalscorer?

Name me a striker that, last season or this season, would have come to Everton and would have GUARANTEED us 25 goals.
It's not easy, but we haven't done a very good job at replacing his goals in two years. We've just done a terrible job of having his goals distributed around the squad. Our central defenders, for example, very very rarely score. 1 goal scored from a corner in around 150 corners so far. It's embarrassing. Coleman's goal ratio has gone down the pan - he simply never threatens any more apart from the one goal he grabbed. Tosun and Walcott brought in for 50m and they are both crap. I hope Marcel has some bright ideas to make us more potent up front.

Right, but that's not the manager's fault if the chances are getting created? Like, under Sam/Koeman, the chances just weren't coming. The chances now are coming (mostly against the big teams or, in reality, just away from home, because we're a counter-attacking side), yet the players aren't putting them away.

Of course we need a striker, but we need a very particular type that fits into the system Silva wants to play.

It's not impossible but it is difficult to get one of the required quality needed in January. But yes, Brands has to prove he can find that gem.

A good post mate. It's clear what we need, but actually getting that right one in is extremely difficult. Look at Southampton, they bought Danny kin Ings and he demolished Arsenal yesterday. Not saying I would want him, but he seems to work for them. I'd even take Shane Long over Tosun for example, and he's not even Saints' first choice. Let's hope we can pull something out of the bag.

I mean Shane Long is gash but I get the principle.

Myself (a few months back) and @MarcelsGoat have both mentioned someone like Seb Haller. Now, neither of us are going to have one iota of impact in terms of what Brands wants, but when you get posters banging on about that we should sign X player or Y player without adding any context of what style of player we may need, for example, then it just gets a bit frustrating.

So because we need such a particular player (basically someone who has the physicality of Richarlison but also that natural poachers' instinct) then it's easy to tell that it's going to be a difficult task in January. Again, I say difficult but not impossible. People just need to realise the task though.

Which is my point - ultra positive bloos may be happy for a bloke managing us to 8th/9th place finishes alongside clubs spending a 1/3 or 1/4 of what we are but I doubt the bloke whos writing the cheques will be.

People can argue back and forth but the reality is we are spending more money than any club outside the top 6 season after season (and are creeping up on both Arsenal and Spurs) 7th at ease and strong cup showings have to be the minimum target in my eyes before slowly building a side to push the top 6.

We cant even get wins against top 7-10 at the moment which is my point that Silva has to show progression over the 2nd half of the season to justify him keeping his job.

£85 million spent in the summer
2 loan players worth about £60 million
Likely another £40-60 odd million we will spend in January

If we dont finish 7th with over £200 million worth of talent whilst clubs like Watford are level despite spending 1/4 of this surely thats poor management? Hopefully Moshiri see's it as that if worst case scenario comes.
Also our 5th manager in 3 years who took over us in a World Cup year with a shambles of a squad. He’s ticked
Most boxes for me so far. I only missed 2 home matches last season and when I consider some of the performances how we made 8th was a minor miracle. Even the Mina Criticism isa bit unwarranted. He’s in the main played ok and played the top 3 teams in the league away and he’s completely new to the league and relatively young for an experienced centre half who will get better.

Well said Toff.

Spurs are definitely the model we need to try and replicate. They always have been IMO, because of the constraints of their wage structure and their frugal accounting with transfers. The problem is, we've actually overtaken Spurs in terms of spending on players, but remain leagues apart.

Their starting line up Vs Burnley at the weekend

Lloris - £10m
Trippier - £3.5m
Alderweireld - £11.5m
Davies - £10m
Rose - £1m
Sissoko - £30m
Skipp - Academy
Lamela - £25m
Alli - £5m
Moura - £25m
Kane - Academy

That line-up doesn't include some of their best players IMO (Son - £22m, Wanyama - £11m, Vertonghen - £10m, Eriksen - £11m)

Now I understand that transfer fees have been inflated to ridiculous proportions over the past few years - but even at the time the Spurs squad was purchased they probably would have been within our price range for purchase. How is it that so much of their squad has been able to either instantly adapt to the league, or grow into it so much that they are considered to be some of the best players within it? Have they been incredibly lucky with transfers or blessed with exceptional academy talent and a Nostradamus like scouting network?

We used the 'No money' stick for years to beat our rivals with - What's our stick now?
