You really have to question our midfield setup and understand what actually went wrong.

Playing Rooney and Schneiderlin is the root of the problem.

Rooney is slow and cumbersome with or without possession. Hardly controls the midfield and constantly in danger of losing possession. Schneiderlin sits too deep when we defend or attack. With Davies being the 3rd midfielder, he has to push higher to close down and drop deeper to cover Rooney due to his indiscipline positioning. On the other hand, Davies has to cover for the lack of effort from Schneiderlin. He’s basically doing a lot of things on the pitch to make up for flaw of the other 2 veteran midfielders. The sight of him pressing alone without help is depressing. With all these in consideration, it’s an extremely difficult job for a 19 year old. It’s no surprise there’s not much left in him after 70ish minute. The exact same happen to Gana and he’s also getting unfair criticism this season.

The only way to see the best of Davies is having another combative midfielder to share the workload of winning the ball and covering the ineffective Rooney. As well as allowing him more freedom to launch an attack and less responsibility to do everything that the other 2 midfielder can’t.

How do you excuse the passing to the opposition all the time or when winning the ball losing it straight away because he is admiring his achievement of winning the ball. I may be a bit harsh on the lad but from what I have seen of him this season he needs to seriously improve just to be an OK player.

Tiredness and the lack of composure that is infecting the entire team at the moment.
Schneiderlin passes to teammate most of the time with Low risk 5 yards sideways backwards passes.
Davies tried to plays it forward but the lack of movement narrows the angle and eliminate the passing options available. Making it more difficult to execute passes without losing possession.

I have seen Davies playing backward passes to the opposition though. His passing is slack even when under little pressure and when under pressure it is even worse.

Bang average. Like all our midfielders, all he does is run about like a headless chicken, try to win the ball back and that's about it. Picking out a decent pass is alien to him just like it is to Gana, Schneiderlin and even Rooney.

But Rooney does dictate the tempo of the game, like at home to West Ham and Brighton. Yes, very poor against City and Liverpool, but mainly due to hopeless midfield partners.

Tom Davies is very poor. The vast majority agree with this, I think, deep down, even he knows he isn't good enough for the first team. I think his next move is crucial, somewhere like Wigan might be good for him.

Rooney controls games against dross and gets over run by decent/good teams is that what you are saying?

As for Tom no he hasn't had a good season but the lad is the only one with energy and attempts forward passes, and when he doesn't play we miss him. He has lots to improve but he's so young I don't know how he can be written off especially considering the dross surrounding him.

Rooney > Davies easily. END OF

I said earlier in the thread that in most games we are requiring him to play like Arteta at his peak which is ridiculous. Arguably we are requiring him to play like a combination of Arteta's AND Peter Reid at their respective peaks which really is ridiculous. I understand completely why some (many) have reservations about him because he has played with much less style this year than last season and made fewer killer passes. I still think there is a cracking player in there but agree he has to speed up delivery to players in better position than he is but that is as much about the horrible (lack of) shape, pace and movement in the team as a whole. Our play in possession has been dire all season and his passing has been worse than last year but he has time still to improve.

I am amazed that some Evertonians have lowered their expectations to the level of accepting average wannabees as good enough for our club. The top 6 aim far higher. At least try to join them or accept mediocrity. I have no idea if Davies or several young players presently on our books will ever make top players. Their misfortune has been to arrive at a period of sudden decline which does not help them. None however have shown anything much beyond energy and effort. All have shown serious deficiencies which raise doubts about the. Which deficiencies do I mean? Well the ability to pass and shoot, or at least the indication that they have that basic ability which can be developed.

Not sure how they can be compared tbh, one is at the start of his career, one is nearing the end and having to drop further and further back to carry on playing. Of course Rooney was a better player, he probably has a better football brain too, but his legs are going he can't compete in midfield against high energy high pressing quality midfields anymore. I would look at him as a bench player next season, to add experience and winners mentality around the team but he shouldn't be an automatic starter.

Tom has energy some vision and can press, he is a different type of player at a different stage of his career. He will probably never scale peak Rooney heights in play or achievements but he could still be a good midfielder for us in rotation or alongside a better balanced midfield.
