'2nd Season Syndrome' has happened to better than Tom.

Leave the lad alone.

He was one of our top 3 performers last season under the fraud Koeman and this season we haven't had a manager who knows what the best 11 is.

Some of you lot are bonkers making the kid a scapegoat when there is so much more wrong at Everton.

Is "2nd Season Syndrome" not just a fancy way of saying "1 Season Wonder"? I am just playing devil's advocate here by the way, because I don't think either phrase applies to Tom Davies. The way he is playing right now isn't so dissimilar to what he produced last season, he just doesn't have a crowing moment like his goal against City.

Also saying that Tom Davies was one of our top 3 performers last season is just plain wrong. As well as he did coming into the team, are you seriously suggesting that he had a better season than Lukaku, Barkley, Gana, Coleman (pre-injury)? Schneirdrerlin had a bigger impact too and there's a couple of others who I could make a case for. Its this kind of over-rating that blows the debate about Tom Davies to silly levels.

If you're going to say that Tom Davies was one of our three best players last season, his critics are entitled to ask you why he has come nowhere near those levels this season. People who are worried about his progression are not making him a scapegoat.

I do think this is just a general problem in this country though, every new english player that comes through seems to be labelled as 'world class'

I wasn't suggesting anything other than reminding posters on this thread the conclusions drawn from the match day threads of last season, and the popular opinion of match day posters at the time.

I would also point to the match day threads this season where the GOT keyboard warriors are ripping the lad to shreds. It is there for everybody to read and scapegoat is the word associated.

I will also stand by the point that the performances of those around him leaves much to be desired. Those so called 'experienced professionals' playing next to him...NOT leading by example, not talking to him or helping him.

However, I respect your different point of view and I know all on here just want us to win!

It simply means that a young player who surprised everybody in their first competitive year is no longer the surprise package. There are expectations going with them now and opponents have had a chance to study them and know how to deal with them better... it is just part of the learning curve, nobody ever said it was a medical condition.

I hope all the lads slating Tom these last few days are watching this Swansea game and can see the problem is way deeper than his performances.

Morgan and Wayne make everybody look bad.

Well unfortunately you have got to judge 19 year old kids otherwise you'd end up keeping them all. Holding onto a player because they're young isn't the best transfer strategy I've ever heard.

You really have to question our midfield setup and understand what actually went wrong.

Playing Rooney and Schneiderlin is the root of the problem.

Rooney is slow and cumbersome with or without possession. Hardly controls the midfield and constantly in danger of losing possession. Schneiderlin sits too deep when we defend or attack. With Davies being the 3rd midfielder, he has to push higher to close down and drop deeper to cover Rooney due to his indiscipline positioning. On the other hand, Davies has to cover for the lack of effort from Schneiderlin. He’s basically doing a lot of things on the pitch to make up for flaw of the other 2 veteran midfielders. The sight of him pressing alone without help is depressing. With all these in consideration, it’s an extremely difficult job for a 19 year old. It’s no surprise there’s not much left in him after 70ish minute. The exact same happen to Gana and he’s also getting unfair criticism this season.

The only way to see the best of Davies is having another combative midfielder to share the workload of winning the ball and covering the ineffective Rooney. As well as allowing him more freedom to launch an attack and less responsibility to do everything that the other 2 midfielder can’t.
